Hi everyone.  So sorry in advance for this gross TMI post but I'm freaking out here.  For the past two days, I've made myself an organic fruit/veggie smoothie with collard greens, carrots, cucumber, apple, ginger, and *beets*.  I don't remember seeing anything in my stool yesterday (I don't think I paid attention) but this morning I had diarrhea (coffee often does that to me) and when I looked down it had swirls of BRIGHT RED like blood in the water (sorry I know, SO gross).  There was no red whatsoever on the toilet paper when I wiped, just brown.  But the watery stuff looked red like blood.  This has never happened before.  Could it be from the beets?  Or is this serious and I need to go to the ER?  I am so freaked out.  Please help!!

It is from the beets and you are fine, no ER visit needed.  (Beets are actually notorious for this, as is red velvet cake.) If this really bothers you just cut them out of your smoothie and things should be back to normal in a day or two. Relax and hang in there!

Thank you so much, Stressed Jumper.  I just went again (SORRY, this post is super tmi!) and while it was still red, there was a lot less of it so I'm assuming it's the beets making their way out.  Super scary though, and I'd be lying if I said I'm not still a little worked up but I have too much to do to get ready to go away for Christmas so I'm going to try to put it out of my mind.

No worries, my hubby had the same thing happen with red velvet cake and freaked too.  Once we figured it out he calmed down and all was well...although I still tease him about it 2 years later.  :-)  Have a very happy holiday!

This same exact thing happened to me!  I was drinking beet and parsley juice and had the same bathroom issue!  I also wanted to assure you it's 100% from the beets!  Keep drinking beet juice because it's super healthy for you!!

Thanks, Nd84!  I know!  I've really been on this healthy kick and making lots of awesome juices.  But did you have the red in the water type thing?  Maybe not the same since you might not have had diarrhea when it happened to you, but just wanted to check.  In any case, thanks for replying!  Such a relief to know it's probably the beets.

Try drinking blueberry juice. It makes your stool blue-gray. ;D First time I noticed I freaked out also but then I remembered that I had drunk bluberry juice.

I've had colon cancer and also have external 'roids that will sometimes burst open.  Two years ago I ate several pieces of Red Velvet Cake and my formed stool was red. Scared me to death until I remembered what I'd eaten!

Haha Extrovert, that would be a different type of "OMG".

Ihadcancer, thanks for the response.  I actually had breast cancer 5 years ago, when I was 24, so I easily get freaked out by anything now, even the smallest things.  Glad to hear you say you "had" cancer.  I hope you never have it again.

So this morning, there was a little less red but the water in the toilet still looked like a reddish-orange though considerably less than yesterday.  The veggie juice drink with the beets I had was two days ago.  Can this still cause such a coloration 2 days later?  I'm still so worried about this as this has never happened before  :(  Anyone have any advice/encouragement?

I just red that collard greens, carrots, and beets can turn your stools orange.  Has anyone else heard of this?  I would think collard greens would turn your stools green.  I had a massive amount of collard greens, 2 carrots, 2 beets, a cucumber, an apple, and ginger in the juice drink.  Could collard greens be the culprit along with the beets?

It's just so strange that I've never had this happen before and I juice with all different kinds of greens, including kale which I read can also turn stools green.  Anything high in beta-carotene can.  But I've never had orange stools before.  So freaked out and want to believe that's all this is.

In order to find out you need to stop drinking it. I know tht isn't your first choice but it is the only way to know. Or go get a card from the drug store that tests to see if there is blood in your stool. Most likely it is just what you are eating but it is better to err on the side of caution. I had blood in my stool and cut out everything that was red or could have caused red to find out.

Brick5711, yes I know, I'm currently taking a hiatus from juicing to see if that's it.  But it's only been 2 days since my last one with the beets in it.  It was still reddish orange this morning and that juice with the beets was two days ago.  I'm wondering if anyone knows if that can linger in your system for a couple days after drinking it?

Don't use a FOB from the pharmacy if you've taken Vit. C.  False positive. Also, before a colonoscopy they say NOTHING red for two days (day before/ day of) because it will stain your colon.  I would think it would take several days to clear up color wise!
