Mice in house, afraid of diseases
« on: December 14, 2013, 11:56:22 PM »
For the past 2-3 weeks, we've been trapping mice in our small apartment. There's still one on the loose we can't catch but we see quite often. I cleaned my room and found droppings, a new hole, etc. Because I live in the east, I don't (much) have to worry about hantavirus, but I still get fixated on  lymphocytic choriomeningitis -- especially since I now have a sore throat.

Anyone else worry about this? I think I'm getting over the hypochondria (even though I broke rule #1 and google'd) because I ruled out the deadly virus, but there's still the 5%-chance-I-could-get-meningitis that has me freaking out. Historically meningitis is one of my fears, along with heart attack and cancer.

Thanks in advance!

I found some statistics... between 1-5% of the US population has the antibodies for the disease. And 10-20% of immunocompetent adults progress to the neurological disease part of it.

So best case... 0.01 * 0.10 = 0.001 or 0.1% chance I have the neurological disease.
Worst case... 0.05 * 0.20 = 0.01 or 1% chance.

That's a bit reassuring. :| I guess.

Eventually the mouse will be gone one way or another. The key is to find where they are
coming in from so this does not keep on happening. We had a mouse or two in our house years ago
and we found out where they were coming in from and sealed the opening and they stopped coming in.

Right, we worked on that, but the mouse could have already given me its diseases -_-
