shower anxiety? weird
« on: December 12, 2013, 11:10:24 PM »
So I was just wondering if something  I seem to have developed is experienced by anyone else here. So lately with my anxiety and OCD, I habe developed a fear or uneasiness of the shower. The whole idea of having to take  shower is somewhat discomforting now. I used to LOVE showers, I could spend hours under the hot water. Now, it is like I just rush to get out as fast as I can. It all started not too long after my anxiety and OCD flare up about four or so months ago. I guess really what feeds It is my hypochondriac fear that I'll drop dead any minute now. When im not in the shower. I have things to distract me. But when im in there, my thoughts race. I think, "what if I die in the shower?" I picture myself  just collapsing in there, with no one around. It scares me, and when I am in the shower I get feelings of dread and feel like my time is up. I dont enjoy showers anymore. I just thought I would ask since I am getting in the shower soon and not looking forward  toit. Especially since ive been feeling off all day, ive been having palpitations like skips or something since last night, and I just feel really uneasy. It would be nice to know im not the only one with this!I

Yes, I had this earlier in the year. It was odd, but did pass.

My heart rate goes up in the shower and that usually makes me anxious.

For me its opposite.  Whenever I wake up in the middle of the night and am really anxious it helps to take a hot shower.

This is a new thing for me, too. One of my biggest fears is passing out and I read earlier in the year that sometimes too hot of a shower can cause a vasovagal response and now I'm terrified of  passing out in the shower. Nothing bad has ever happened when I do get up the courage to take a shower and I always feel better after I take one but it's really hard to convince myself to take one when I need to.

I get the same feeling when taking a bath. I don't usually shower because I use to enjoy just relaxing in the bath but now I don't. Like you, when I need to take a bath, I start to get the feeling of dread and I usually try to be as quick as possible. I usually get in the bath before it is even half full and instantly start washing myself in shallow water. It's crazy.

I can't really give you the explanation as to why you have this anxiety but I am sure that the reason I get anxious over having baths is because I have had a few episodes of finding various blemishes and marks on my body during a bath. Of course, due to my anxiety, I start to worry about it being various cancers or whatever and usually get straight out the bath in panic mode.

So I think I am anxious about having baths because I usually start to check my body more during the bath - maybe this is the same for you? Even when I tell myself to just go in the bath, wash, then get straight back out and dry myself out without looking in the mirror at my body too much, I usually always check something - like a mole or something on my back to see if it has changed.

It is really weird, I agree.
