One important question
« on: December 11, 2013, 05:03:04 PM »
Next week I'll be coming up on 2 years of chronic suffering from GAD ... I'm gonna start Xanax XR but just have a simple question... Now I know xanax is fast acting, but how long should It take my mind to get out of this rut I'm in... I know I'm not gonna take one pill and be all better , what I'm asking is how long does it Usually take for the mind to heal and get bAck to normal? I have mild-moderate anxiety that is about anxiety itself and my thought process so of I were taking a consistent dose... How long till u think everything in my mind settles down and I will start thinking about other things and get back to normal again?

Hi chris,

in my opinion, this is like 1million $ question. It all depends on how much time and energy you're gonna invest into resolving your problems and on your anxiety itself.

Xanax xr is an extended release version of xanax, it should cover 24 hours, that is work 24 hours, but sometimes it's prescribed to be taken 2 times a day and not for very long periods of time.

Hope you feel better soon.

What do u mean how much time and energy I put into my problems? Then what are the meds for? I don't have any problems Aside from anxiety itself

Believe it or not some of us deal with our issues without meds, though if meds help, fine and good. For some they are a panacea. But not for all, necessarily.

Anxiety often is a multi-layered problem with few quick, easy solutions. Some of us are at it for years looking at our origins, our tendencies, reading and learning and thinking and searching. We may turn to CBT, to exercise, to journaling, to meditation. It can be a progression from fear, to worry, to stress, to anxiety, to depression. Just some thoughts for you to consider.

By that I did not mean anything bad, chris.
As tinam7 nicely put it, anxiety originates from somewhere and there are different ways to deal with it.
And also all meds don't work for all people so you should not get discouraged if the first med you're on doesn't help you.
Anyhow, xanax belongs to a group of meds called benzodiazepines which are not cure but more like a quick fix, like a bandage. They get out of your system in a short period of time. For prolonged issues doctors usually choose antidepressants which build up in your system.

I'm simply affraid of my thoughts and feelings and that's it I would do CBT but idk if i have the strength or patience at this point for CBT if I had found a med that worked, that alone would give me the courage and the strength to overcome
It without meds just knowing I had a safety net

If xanax xr is effective for you, perhaps that can settle your mind enough to get into CBT and start working on things. But xanax won't do anything to "cure" the anxiety, it will simply cover up the symptoms. I recommend you consider meditation or exercise as well, both can be very effective at managing anxiety especially if you don't feel you have the ability to focus on something like CBT yet
