Brother has pnemonia in both lungs
« on: December 10, 2013, 06:24:58 AM »
Hi guys and gals,

I haven't posted in a little while because I've been busy with work and going back to school. But I'm really concerned. I have a little brother who is 11. He was recently diagnosed with pnemonia in both of his lungs and was put on antibiotics. Well it's been at least 4 days and he isn't much better. Yeah he's coughing less, but he is incredibly weak and tired. I'm very concerned. His father seems to think he's better because he doesn't have a fever anymore and hasn't been coughing as much, but a healthy kid shouldn't be that weak, right? He told me that he has trouble getting to the bathroom. Also he said he is still having trouble breathing.

What do you guys think the next course of action (if any) would be? I'm very concerned. :(

Gosh I'm sorry that is a tough thing to happen to a kid :(

I'm not an expert on Pneumonia so all I can really say is keep the doctors posted on his progress (as I am sure you are). I would assume, like your dad, that the reduction in fever is a good sign (not exactly a recovery but progress).

A little digging suggests that if your Brother is healthy in other respects then he should be fine as it is only really dangerous for the lederly or already ill. Wishing him a speedy and full recovery :)

Thanks for your reply! Much appreciated. He is healthy, but he told me that he is feeling worse and he's been taking the antibiotics for a few days. I worry about him like he's my son haha. His father (we have different dads) is taking him to the ER because of how bad he's feeling. I'm glad that he's going honestly

Well, he went to the doctors today and got an X-ray. The pnemonia has gotten worse so apparently the antibiotics didn't work. Doctor suggested he go to the hospital and possibly be admitted. I'm FREAKING. Obviously not in front of him, as he is only 11, but this kid is my world and I want him better.

If the pneumonia is not getting better, it sounds like the hospital is the place to be.  My husband had double pneumonia a few years ago in July (weird to be that sick in the summer, but it happened).  He spent about a week in the hospital and was on IV antibiotics and tons of pain killers.  I remember that they tried a few different antibiotics before they found the right combination for him.  He was in much worse shape than your brother and he was much older, too!  He is perfectly fine today with no lasting effects.

I know it's soooo scary, especially with kids...please keep us posted but I'm sure he'll be fine.  They just need to find the right meds for your brother and he'll be back to his old self before you both know it.

((((HUGS)))) and healing thoughts going your way!!  :action-smiley-065:

My younger brother had a viral pneumonia when he was 10. Had to stay in the hospital for a week (during christmas) because a virus can't be cured with antibiotics. It was scary, but he's now a 27-year old athlete. If your brother still has pneumonia, the hospital is the place to be for him. Yes, he's weak now, the fever took a lot of energy and it will take a couple of weeks for him to be his old self again. If you feel like talking, you know where to find us!

Thank you for your replies everyone!! It's comforting to know you guys went through similar situations and your loved ones came out of it ok. He is being admitted overnight for observation because his oxygen is lower than normal. I'm sure he will be 100% fine but I am a worrier! :)

He's in good hands at the hospital. My daughter was hospitalized at 6 weeks old. It was very scary but also comforting to know she was surrounded by doctors and nurses that could help her. I hope he has a speedy recovery!

Thank you Brooke! He loves it there!! He's getting waited on and can relax and not have to do homework lol. But he seems to be ok. I'm glad it wasn't more serious.

Thank you so much for asking! He is doing a lot better. He's home now :) that was the first time he was hospitalized like that and I was so nervous. Luckily his oxygen level got a lot better and new antibiotics started kicking in!!
