Palpitations while falling asleep
« on: September 15, 2008, 03:25:20 AM »
Does any one else here get a sudden jump or two in their heart just as they drift off to sleep? This seems to be the only time I get them, but I do have anxiety issues going on. Sometimes it causes insomnia, but when I do eventually fall asleep this can happen too. It causes me to wake suddenly, then I get a little rush, then settle back down, but it can happen multiple times. Very disconcerting, especially when I really am tired.

I get those especially when i'm trying to fall asleep or when i'm sleeping i wake up with my heart jumping. It's all part of anxiety. I been through all the test for my heart and everything came back fine. Hope this helps.

I have them too, tests all clear. The come just before sleep perhaps because they're only noticed then in the quiet, perhaps because they come most when tired but either way, this is the time they're most common.

Are you talking about the twitching that happens when you fall asleep?

Hey, I used to deal with this. Just as I was about to drift off I would get a shot of adrenaline and my heart would start racing and I'd be back up again. I dealt with bad insomnia for about three months. As my anxiety got better this went away. I would recommend drinking some celestial seasonings extra sleepytime tea a little before bed maybe two tea bags for a stronger effect, then reading or watching some tv - whatever you do to wind down and it'll help you relax and drift off. Another key element for me was getting some good cardio exercise maybe 4-5 hours before bed, it really helps burn off some of the residual stress and tension which contributes to those jolts as you're trying to fall asleep.

I have actually just started getting those palpations the last few nights while trying to relax on the couch or fall asleep in bed! It came randomly as I was only wathcing tv! It kinda freaked me out, my heart usually doesn't beat fast while I'm laying down!!!

When I start to fall asleep I feel my heart "Skip" a few beats.  I wake up nightly with my heart pounding though.  Makes me scared to go to sleep too.  Always worrying about my heart..... :traurig001:

I had a bad bout of it last night. I had an EKG, x-ray, and blood test last month, plus my doctor and the testing doctors checking my pressure and heart with stethoscope, and they said everything was fine. It's still scary, and makes me feel ill and anxious. I told my doctor, and the other one about it, but they don't really seem to react as though it's a big deal. Next week when I go to my GP for a follow up I'm going to ask for a bit more in depth answer as to why it happens and if it's a serious risk. I've had this during periods of anxiety for 15 years, so in a way I know it's not the end of me, not too likely anyway, but I would like it to end someday.

yeah this has happend to me alot
maybe it's just because your going from all the anxiety of the day and finally your hearts slowing down and it just wants to skip a beat or two
i know stuff like that has kept me awake before
but i think it's okay
just part of anxiety =(

Yep, this happens to me too, when I have anxiety. Like oblivion posted before, just as im about to finally drift off, i get a shot of adrenaline and heart starts racing.

Anxiety is tolerable with sleep for me, but when I don't get enough...erghhh. it's rough. Getting to sleep can sometimes be one of the hardest times for me
