waking up every morning with a sore throat
« on: December 29, 2011, 08:34:30 AM »
This has been going on for a while...months..... but I just decided to post because my anxiety is running mad right now. Every day without fail I wake up with a sore throat and I'm not sure what's causing it. Does this sound serious and is it something I should be worried about? Usually it goes away fairly quickly, it's usually gone by the time I get out of the shower right when I wake up. Sometimes it will stick around a little longer.

Hm, did it happen to start when it got a little colder in autumn?

My guess is that dry weather with no humidifier is your culprit.  If it only happens at night (it goes away after waking), then it seems like it's due to your environment.  Diseases don't usually know what time of day it is.

You may want to try a humidifier and/or having a glass of water before you go to bed.  But to answer you specifically, no, I wouldn't worry about this unless it lasted into the day or you had a serious cough or something.

I wake up with a dry and sore throat myself sometimes. My doctor
told me it was probably allergies, post nasal drip, the environment I was in, etc.
As long as it goes away, I would not worry.

Once a dr told me that lots of ppl have GERD and don't even know it and at night they have it and wake up with a sore throat. But allergies is why inwake up with a sore throat as well as being a nighttime mouth breather. Try a humidifier, allergy meds or reflux meds to see if it helps. The fact that it goes away once you get up is pretty good indication that it's nothing serious.

I'm having the same thing at the moment... I think it's a combo of dry air, heater dust, post-nasal drip and maybe dust mites. You could try a humidifier, cleaning out heating ducts and washing your bedding...

I've had a sore throat for some time myself (since having a cold the week of Thanksgiving), and it lasts all day.

So, with people saying "as long as it doesn't hang around," does that mean it's something bad?  I do know that a sore throat plus nasal congestion can be candida, which is highly probable with me, but wondering what else it could be...

Well, if you have a sore throat for a month or longer, you should get it checked out, but even then it's most likely post-nasal drip, allergies or GERD. (I speak from experience.)

Allergies will give you really sore throats.  Especially is you have the post nasal drip.  All that drainage going down your throat at night is rough on the tissue.  During the day you have the help of gravity to get it moving, and you are more actively moving it by swallowing, and then you have food and drinks to help.  But at night, it just slowly treks down your throat.  It's very likely just allergies.

This used to happen to me often, and i have post nasal drip. What I found that works, is tirningg my heat down before going to bed, window cracked just a tiny bit and taking benadryl before bed. No more waking up with a dry sore throat. Sometimes, but not nearly as often.  Im sure you have nothing to worry about:)

Thanks everyone. I do have acid reflux....and it's really bad at night before I go to bed so i'll start taking a prilosec before bed and see if it starts helping. I also worry about thrush so that has me worried as well :(
