Cant fall asleep because of obsessive thoughts
« on: May 30, 2011, 02:14:26 AM »
It seems I have more and more trouble the older I get with falling asleep due to the fact that when I lay in bed, my mind kicks into overdrive and I start to obsess over trivial things.  Did I lock the door at work?  Did I call so and so back at work?  Did I lock my car?  Did I remember to fill my tank up?

then when there are actual worries to think about, like the fact that my mother is having open heart surgery on wednesday, sleep is a foreign concept and I have a tendancy to worry myself into a panic.  I've turned to alcohol as a general form of relief but I know it's not healthy and I wish I could stop, but it's the only thing that slows my brain down enough to where I'm not devolving into a state of hysteria.  Xanax does not help when it has gotten to this point.

Please, if you have any insight, please help.

You just described me all the way my friend. I hate when nighttime comes because I never know what is going to pop in to my head. My heart was pounding last night when I was trying to get some sleep. I had finally gotten to sleep somehow or another. I was sure it was going to be another night like the previous night. I definitely know where you're coming from on that subject. I've had too many nights turn out like that and I just drag the next day.

Hi Silver,

Welcome to the forum. I have a lot of issues sleeping as well. One thing I have found that is the only way I can get to sleep is to watch TV shows on my laptop or read until I pass out. Sometimes even a crossword puzzle.

You might also try cutting out all caffiene and sugar before a certain time of day, a lot of people don't drink coffee after 2 or they will be up all night. I on the other hand find that I can only fall asleep after I eat a snack and have a few drinks of coca cola.

Everyone is different and it might also be helpful to ask your doctor for some sleeping medication...but you would need to not drink alcohol while you are taking them.

My grandma "got over" her severe anxiety and agoraphobia by switching to alcohol and though it worked for her, this was before they had all these excellent medications out there.

Talk to your doctor, try to create a bedtime routine and try to find some helpful distractions to keep your mind off of it.

Good luck to you and your mom with the surgery!!

I have a suggestion that my therapist gave me, that seems to be working.

Buy some post-it notes. Before you go to bed, write every thought on them, one thought per note, and toss them up on your wall away from your bed. Then  you tell yourself (every time you post a note up) "okay, this thought is over there now, it's out of reach, I can no longer touch it to obsess over it. I am not giving myself permission.  I am letting it go".  Do that for every thought.

As you're laying in bed, if those thoughts creep in, say it again. Name the thought "I am not giving myself permission to obsess over the locks at work since I can't control that now, so I am letting it go". Sometimes it takes a while for it to work, but for me, it does work.

This used to happen to me all of the time. There were nights that I wouldn't get to sleep until 4 or 5 in the morning because I would think myself into full blown anxiety attacks. I would just lay there in bed all night and worry about all of the possible things that could go wrong from every possible angle. Over the years the nights when this happens are much less frequent, but I acutally have anxiety related to bedtime because I am afraid that I am going to have one of these nights.

If I have to work the next day, I will do almost anything to make sure that I will fall asleep quickly. I will take sleep medication, I will ensure that I am not hungry, thirsty, or have to go to the bathroom. I make sure that there is a fan going in my room at all times so that there is white noise to cover any outside distractions. If I have any back pain I will take pain medication. If I am anxious I will also take a klonipin. I have been afraid at times that I am going overboard on the medications, but I am terrified of having one of THOSE nights.

There have been a lot of those nights recently. A lot of 'what if' thoughts preventing me from going to sleep. These thoughts are what my pdoc calls 'noise'. When and if I do go to sleep I have nightmares and wake up frequently- 5 or 6 times a night fully awake. Either that or I am barely asleep and am aware of everything that goes on around me.

I wish I had a solution. I am right there with you.

Very common symptom for GAD. Without medication, my only solution was to resolve whatever I could (i.e. run outside and check my car door locks, go through every window and door in the house to make sure they were locked, check the stove, check my kids, etc) then turn on the TV and try to find something interesting enough to distract my brain until I fell asleep. If I couldn't do both of those things, I would just lay there in bed crying until I got a migraine and fell asleep hours later out of pure exhaustion.

I don't have any need for TV or even checking on my SNRI. Without the SNRI, I really don't have any suggestions, unfortunately.

I have been going through the same problem with intrusive and obsessive thoughts when going to bed and sometimes i hardly get any sleep at all.

For the first time yesterday (i am not one for taking meds) i decided to take "Optimum Nutrition's Melatonin" and 30 minutes later i was relaxed, comfortable and i was able to have my FIRST uninterupted sleep in what must be 4 years, i woke up feeling refreshed and much better.

Melatonin is a hormone that the body naturally creates when the lights dim to encourage the mind and body to sleep and get a good nights rest. If you have anxiety, stress, etc then you may have developed a low level of melatonin and you can replace this with a 3mg pill from this company. It is NOT addictive (due to it being a naturally produced drug) and you cannot build a tolerance to it, but it is recommended to do maybe 5 - 6 days on with 1 night off in between so your body clock can still natually adjust as needs be.

Here is a link:

If you dont believe me, check out some of the reviews:

Hope this helps at least one person :)

Wow, you all just described me as well.  My mind just goes on and on at night, I as well dread bedtime.  I lay there and my mind thinks of everything, what I have to do the next day, did I do everything right, are the kids school stuff all ready, etc etc.  It's everything.  Either I end up panicking or I end up falling asleep after a long time.  Wish my mind would hush sometimes

Why donít you go through a sleep test? I had one at the sleep center, NJ. The sleep specialists there didnít find anything wrong with me, but I went through therapy and I really felt much better after that. All the anxiety that I held on to in the night is gone. I eat better, exercise regularly and stay off sugars, caffeine, and any kind of stimulants at least 3 hours before going to bed. The sleep therapy was just what I needed.
