Although there are many similarities between a heart attack and anxiety attack, I have read that the biggest difference between the two is that a heart attack is normally accompanied by severe pain, rather than just tightness and discomfort as is the case with an anxiety attack.

another difference is you end up in the cardiac ward.  With anxiety you may feel some vague similarities but one damages the heart and one doesn't

have a friend in Louisiana who is actually in great shape and all that.  He was at the Y front desk and felt extreme pain in his chest.  He told them he thought he was having a heart attack and then he had one.  He was taken by ambulance to the hospital where it was confirmed that he had one.  And boy was he ticked---I mean that he had a heart attack.

MOST anxiety occurs on a subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state

in his 40's.   Yep all of us were like DANG we are going to just sit on the couch and eat cookies.   :laugh3:

However it appears that he has a genetic thing going on with him.  Something to do with his cholesterol.   So now he is on meds. It's been 5yrs and he is doing FAB.  He is back doing all his triathalon stuff.

I'm not sure--but don't think he really could have with the way he ate.  BUT it had something to do with his issue that cholesterol worked differently on him.  His genetic history or something like that.  You know some people have genes that make them more prone to heart issues.  It was very good that he was so into health and fitness.  If not, with his issue it could have been bad.  But he was actually home from the hospital in just 3 days or so.

But apparently your heart is in good shape cuz you've had the tests for it all.  When they did his tests after his attack it did show deficits.  So you are two different people with different heart histories.  Your heart history and tests are all a thumbs up. ;D

But that doesn't answer the question at hand. How would you know when to take it seriously, or when to just let it pass as an anxiety attack. Because you may be having a heart attack and shrug it off, and die.

Losing anxiety is like losing weight: It comes off very slowly and at a steady pace with a LOT of hard work, however if you start overeating again (Worrying in our case) it comes back full blown in a week or two.

the main difference is that if your concerned about it,  you go get throughly checked out including cholestorol etc.........if everything is clear then its prob anxiety especially if you know youve been prone to anxiety before. Then.....just make sure you don't engage in the bad behaviors that can damage  your heart. In moderation of course

My friend who is an internist/cardiologist said that typically the pain associated with a heart
attack is much more severe and longer lasting than with an anxiety attack. He also said that
inflammation of the arteries is now thought to be a precursor to heart disease, even more so than
cholesterol alone.

I just mean that the more severe and long lasting the pain is, then you should see your doctor
or go to the ER.
