Underarm lump still giving me grief
« on: September 03, 2014, 12:02:01 PM »
For months now I've had a lump under my arm.  Despite its changing shape, texture and size my doctor is unconcerned.  However, the lymph nodes under that arm have now ballooned up and are rock hard and extremely tender.  I felt some swelling and soreness in them a while ago but this is ridiculous.  I know my doctor knows the difference between cancer and not, but (yep, I'm saying this) he could be wrong - all he's done is feel it.  And now the pain is making it impossible for me to just ignore it and try to live my life - it's hard to lift or move my arm.  Luckily it's on the left and I'm right-handed so it's not too much of an inconvenience but it's still not great.  Between the fear and the pain all I do is worry.  Truth be told I never stopped worrying about it, just stopped touching it so I wouldn't think about it so much.

Besides being sore it's extremely itchy - so again, worrying about lymphoma.

I think the dilemma in being a hypochindriac is that nagging feeling that any request for a diagnosis is feeding the hypochondria. if you have a lump and its changing and lymph nodes are breaking out, yes, that is a legitimate reason to get a "good" opinion. I think you should see a different doctor. Can you make an appointment with a general or breast surgeon? Breast surgeons also deal with the underarms, and you might get a better, more thorough appointment with a specialist.

My doctor is by and large good.  But yeah at this point I know I should get a second opinion.  I'm scared to, though.

I know its hard because it feels like an escalation of the condition. But, you just need to swallow the fear. A second doctor that specializes in lumps telling you the same thing will ease your mind!

I have a lump under my arm for a year now and I never would have noticed it if I didn't find a lymph node in my other breast which I had checked out by ultrasound. It's still there and so is the one under my armpit but my dr said it's not concerning and not that big only 1cm. I had it checked by ultrasound a couple of times and all is ok they just identified it as a benign lymph node. My doctor mentioned that sometimes we nick ourselves when shaving and it can cause a skin infection. Mine doesn't hurt all the time just once in a while but it's movable and not that hard. Even though I had it checked out I sometimes think what if it's cancer? I'm 28 years old and it doesn't run in my family however there still is that chance and my dr assured me it's fine as long as it doesn't continue to grow etc. I also have it in the same spot under my other armpit and that one doesn't hurt but it's the same size.

I too have experienced similar anxiety.  I can feel a lymph node on each size of my groin.  They are both small and I wasn't even anxious about it until my doctor wanted to do some tests to be sure it was benign.  I always attested it to being skinny, however as soon as my dr. was concerned my hypochondria went outta control.  In the week or 2 leading up to my ultra sound I imagined the node had grown and changed in texture, although the ultrasound came back benign and they only measured to be .8 cm.
My advice get a second opinion b/c you may not feel better until you do.  It is PROBABLY nothing to worry about however without that second opinion you may just keep worrying.  and we don't want that :)!

It's frustrating - I'm scared to go to a doctor and I'm scared to not.  I guess I'll give it a few days and see if anything changes.  If not I'll find a doctor, but I'm not sure if I should get a referral or just pick someone myself.  This doctor is one I really do trust, so I've never sought a second opinion on something I've seen him about before.

So I just went and re-read... you mean your current doctor won't address it further, even after you've told him it's hurting you pretty badly??

It wasn't hurting badly at the time, just occasionally annoying.  But he told me basically to not bother him about it again unless it doubled in size.  Which it probably will have done at this rate!  So I'm hesitant to go back, especially since I was just there with my weird bruising, which is apparently nothing.

Well, the pain is almost completely gone this morning, but both underarms are really itchy.  Since itching is a sign of lymphoma, I'm still worried, but at least the pain is gone.

Doctor agreed to give me an antibiotic as he thinks I have an infection.  I'm terrified it won't work and it's cancer.

It might just be irritation from shaving you have been doing that or maybe the deodorant your using.

I haven't been shaving since it started for fear of making it worse.

Someone here posted that their mom had the same symptoms I did - localized pain and itching, including stabbing pains - and now I'm really freaked out (they had lymphoma but she wasn't diagnosed for 18 months because doctors wouldn't look for it.)
