Advice on Therapy
« on: September 01, 2014, 05:25:03 PM »
Does anyone have thoughts one way or the other as to what may be preferred for someone like me who needs therapy for their health anxiety?

Would a psychiatrist or a psychologist be preferred in this situation (and what are the pros or cons, if any)

I do know that one can write scripts and the other would need to work with your doctor to get a script written.

Thanks.

Psychiatrists, in my experience anyway, are more interested with treating your issues with medication rather than therapy.  For therapy, a psychologist or counselor is who you're looking for.

If you can find one in your area, psychologists (therapists) who specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are usually the most effective at treating HA (and its sister condition, OCD).  And I agree with mollyfin - psychiatrists are there to prescribe meds, so I would go to them only if CBT and exercise don't work for you.
