So low don't know where to turn.... Scared I have ms/als
« on: September 01, 2014, 03:27:34 AM »
Hi all, hoping someone can offer me some reassurance....
Have been suffering with ha for some years since my Son was born prematurely.
My husband thinks I'm imagining everything as in the past I've convinced myself I have a brain tumour,
Breast cancer & stomach cancer. However this feels more real than ever. I have been having
Pins and needles in my hands & feet since May, I often wake in the night to
Numb hands & feet. I also have alot of burning over my lumbar region
And have had dizzy spells although these have stopped thank goodness.
I have seen a gp who diagnosed anxiety but referred me to a neuro
For peace if mind. The neuro says my exam us normal but thinks i should have a
Nerve conduction study- got the letter back from him to summarise and says as there is no weakness he's not too concerned- since I've had the letter my limbs have become so weak and painful I feel like I've run a marathon
And am carrying heavy weights. Surely I can't imagine this and the pain.,.. Feel like I'm going crazy & have no one
To talk to. Does this sound like ms or ALS?

I'm so scared ....

Sounds like both doctors are saying they think you're fine but are referring you for tests either to be super cautious or they think it'll give you peace of mind.  Since your feelings of weakness started when you read the letter about your lack of weakness, that could tell you something :)  If you had ALS or MS, you'd BE weak, not just feel weak.  However, feeling weak is really common with stress and anxiety.

Once your nerve conduction test comes back all clear - which is what your doctors are expecting, and they know their stuff! - maybe ask for a referral to a mental health care professional who can help you deal with your anxiety.  It sounds like it's been making you miserable for a long time, and as everyone here knows, that's not a very fun way to live.

It doesn't sound like either.  It sounds like a stress reaction.  Chronic hyperventilation and nervous system hyper-excitability are main culprits concerning many of these symptoms that you are having.  Get some therapy and work on your anxiety.  Seriously, these symptoms will begin to get better when you settle down.

Thanks guys!
I really don't know what to think any more, I'm literally driving myself crazy.
My muscles ache and I feel like everything is an effort, convinced myself
something is going on, have to wait ages now for the tests.
Thanks for your replies- does anxiety cause weakness?
Your right mollyfin, this is no fun way to live and I ruin every day by worrying its a vicious circle and
Am not sure if the worry or the physical symptoms came first or if one is infact causing the other :-(

Anxiety can cause a dropped foot, pseudo-pregnancy, inability to ambulate, blindness...etc and so on.  These are obviously at the far end of the spectrum...conversion disorders.  With that said, many many with anxiety have perceived weakness, jelly legs, numbness, tingling, muscle fatigue, twitching...etc.
