Dreaded Positive FOBT
« on: August 28, 2014, 06:53:46 AM »
Hey all,

I am 30 years old. I have had loose stool for about 3 years (that I can remember) and never really assumed it was much of a problem. Then I started getting stressed and started noticing some random stomach pains (mostly under my rib cage but the odd pain around the lower gut). I went through a really stressful time with something else and suddenly started worrying about feeling sick and stomach pains.

I started to do the old Google search and came up with colon cancer and started to worry myself sick. I saw a couple of doctors who did blood work (all fine) and prodded my gut and just perscribed somac. But it wasn't enough, I had become a hypochondriac with an obsession with Colon Cancer.

Finally after worrying so much I persuaded a doctor to give me a FOBT to try put my mind at rest (I had started to convince myself this was all in my head, I was noticing varied stool daily, my pains weren't bad as sufferers wrote theirs were and I saw no blood in my stool).

One out of three of the samples were positive.

Now I have to see a specialist and get a colonoscopy. Any advice and talking me down would be very appreciated....

I really fell for you and I'm sorry you are going through this because I have been down a very similar and miserable road. When I was 25 years old. Well let me back up. I have been a hypo since childhood. I have been afraid of disease or dying for as far back as my memory will take me. I am 27 years old today.
Ok back to it.  One day in January 2013 on my kids birthday (yes 2 of my children share a birthday) I had a BM and happened to glance into the toilet to notice it was lighter in color than usual. The night before that I had severe heartburn type epigastric pains after eating pizza way to late at night. So when I saw my stool was lighter brown and the pain I had the night before it trigger huge pancreatic cancer fears. Even at 25 that fear consumed my every waking thought. I obsessed over stool color daily. I obsessively google PC. Well one day about 3 weeks after this PanCan fear and obsessive stool checking I had a BM that was normal shape and color but had streaks of bright red blood. Holy cow I freaked out so bad. I right away started googling colon cancer. I was convinced. I continued to have bright red blood on my stools from time to time for almost 1.5 years. This 1.5 years of my life was a pure living hell because of my health anxiety. I was to afraid to see a Gastro because I knew I would get the diagnosis I was fearing.
Finally in April of this year I had the colonoscopy. Other only findings were a small polyp in my sigmoid colon and internal hemorrhoids. The polyp was removed and biopsied and it was 100% benign. Zero cancer risk ever!
So my point is at 30 years old your chances of CC especially from the symptoms you described are very remote. A positive FBOT doesn't even mean true blood was found. Or even if it did it's most likely a benign source.
Go through with the colonoscopy. It's so easy and this will give you peace of mind.

Something as benign as hemorrhoids, anal fizzures - even having taken vitamin C or an aspirin too close to test time - or eating certain VEGETABLES will give you a false positive!

Too bad I couldn't just go back to that previous post and modify it - I can't so I will try to make clear what I mean.  The aspirin and vegetables and vitamin C would give a FALSE positive.  The anal fizzure or hemorrhoids are a real positive but a BENIGN condition.

I just started reading about this. I wasn't told about restrictions so I had a couple of ibprophen, at least a litre of orange juice and some boiled cabbage for dinner the day before my first sample, the one that was positive.

Double BINGO!  on that one - the ibuprofen and the OJ!  (Vitamin C)
Now the OTHER one could have been some other kind of vegetable OR a hemorrhoid!  If it's internal you may not even KNOW it's there.
