Severe anxiety after waking up - afraid of sleeping
« on: August 26, 2014, 02:13:22 AM »
The past two weeks a pattern has been happening. I'd wake up with a panic attack and I'd be stuck in an anxiety low for most of the day. I won't eat or do anything besides lay on the couch and I'll feel sick and nauseous and anxious until about 9 - 11pm. This time I'll take the chance to eat but then I'll go to sleep and wake up and throw up what I'd eaten the next morning.

Also it's not just night and day. Whenever I'd fall asleep and wake up I'd experience a panic attack. I'm so scared of sleeping but my anxiety is tiring me out so much that I give in and go to bed. I'm just so sick of all this.

I strongly recommend you make an appointment with your Dr.

Are you currently on medications?

I posted this earlier to another member.

It sounds exactly like a Panic Disorder - where  you are waking up from "Nocturnal Panic Attacks".

I used to have these all the time - and as u know they are terrorizing and extremely frightening....

My Psychiatrist diagnosed the problem as "Nocturnal Panic Attacks". - made sure to put me on a benzodiazepine right away, to protect me against any future panic attacks caused by my Panic Disorder - after being on this med just a couple of days - I never had another panic attacks at night

Not, only that, but my normal daytime panic attacks also decreased quickly.

Go see your doctor as soon as possible - to diagnose you and provide whatever medications u need.

I know scary this - I hated these Panic Attacks....

Let us know about your progress...

As we wish a quick remedy for this awful period... But the good news is this very common and easily controlled.

Stay strong!  You will soon overcome this!

I go through this periodically, for some reason it's usually when I am away from my home while on vacation.  What should be a relaxing time for me becomes filled with anxiety. What works? Taking a low dose benzo on waking and getting up and doing something. Knitting, a puzzle, walk, whatever to try and distract me. Unfortunately taking a benzo is no good answer, but since it happens only on vacation I use it. At home I'm usually fine. I feel for you, if this is happening all the time it must be rough. Try some distraction. Good luck to you

Hi guys, thanks for the advice. I actually am trying to get to a doctor but I also have some kind of agoraphobia and my anxiety has been so bad I was forced to cancel my appointment. But yeah I agree I do need to see a doctor at this point. I just don't know what to do with my agoraphobia.

Also, Aquamarine, today I've managed to make the anxiety dwindle earlier. So I was able to enjoy longer hours without the agonizing anxiety. I hope to be able to do It soon.

Well, Starting your day off with anxiety is never easy. It essentially sets you up for a struggle, because anxiety tends to beget more anxiety. When you wake up with anxiety, you often find that your stresses are all you can focus on, and every little thing that occurs throughout the day only adds to it.
