Vistaril for Sleep?
« on: August 25, 2014, 09:16:59 PM »
I've been having trouble staying asleep for quite awhile, so my psychiatrist prescribed 25-50mg of Vistaril. I am also taking .5mg Klonopin and 20mg Celexa. I take the Klonopin PRN. I'm wondering if this will actually help me sleep. Has anyone been prescribed this medication? Did it work for you?

Yes, it will work for sleep, since Vistaril is an antihistamine it should help your sleep.

Another, option, if you want to avoid adding yet another medication - you can take .5 - 1 mg of Klonopin daily before bed, I have used this very successfully for years for sleep and it also controlled lowered my anxiety levels greatly!

When I used Klonopin as PRN as needed, it didn't work as well as Xanax or Lorazepam (short half-life) for fast relief of panic attacks.

Klonopin is a (long half-life benzodiazepine) which worked really well for me as a single dose at bedtime .  And provided anxiety protection for the entire whole next day.

You might try the Klonopin daily before bed as an experiment for a week and see if it works for your sleep.  (which I am sure it will!)

If it doesn't work as well as needed you can just use the Vistaril.

There is a very good chance that it will. Most of the non benzodiazepine sleeping pills are antihistamines.

NOTE: I'm not a doctor, and particularly not yours, so there may be factors I'm unaware of. Therefore all advice is of a general nature and you should consult your doctor before following any of it, especially before changing med doses.
