I'm afraid of getting CT scan? Please help.
« on: August 18, 2014, 12:24:52 PM »
The neurologist said he doesn't think my headaches are anything serious even though I think it's a brain tumor.

He prescribed a CT scan. Does it hurt? Will it cause radiation and give cancer? How long does it take?

It uses radiation, but its nowhere near the dose that would be needed to cause cancer. Its about the equivalent of the amount of radiation you'd be exposed to over 2 months.

It doesn't hurt. But the IV they give you is an IV, so that's painful. I don't know whether they always use an IV, but they did with mine.

it does not take very long at all. Its actually pretty boring.

Hello. No need to worry. CT scans are not painful and really aren't that bad. The radiation level is very low and poses no significant risk. Basically you will change into a hospital gown type thing and you'll lay on a bed for a few minutes while the CT takes pictures. You won't feel anything at all. The machine makes kind of a weird noise though. Since you're getting a head CT I don't think they will give you an IV either. My guess if you will be in and out pretty quickly and you'll be surprised how easy it is!!

A CT is a piece of cake! I had one done last time I was having severe anxiety and thought I had a brain tumor. You will just lay on a narrow table whilst your head is in a little tube. It's fast and painless! And maybe it will give you some relief when you get the results! Let us know what the doc says!
