For those who wanted to know how my follow up went, here it goes. I just got back from my 6 month follow up with an MS specialist, and what marks the one year anniversary of the onset of my symptoms. The doc spent a good hour talking with me, I was very pleased with his bedside manner.
The majority of the time, he spent talking to me about controlling my anxiety. He said he wants me to begin behavioral training to condition myself to not react to the symptoms anymore. However, he still said he did not know for sure whether or not I had MS. He said even if I got dx with MS he would still send me to see a behavioral therapist. So he scheduled another follow up six months out. He said a couple things that i thought were important.
A) I told him that he was the sixth neurologist I had seen, and the previous five, after there consultation, told me I did not have MS, and it was JUST anxiety. That's when he butted in and said, "Yeah, but anxiety is a disease too, so it's not just anxiety. We want you to get better, and sending you home with the symptoms still present isn't helping".
B) He told me in all of his years, (he's been at it for a while) he routinely has people like me come in and are afraid of MS. So the scheduled follow-ups are completely normal, and he does it just as a precautionary step. He also said that in his experience, it is very rare for someone who has routinely had normal clinicals and normal imaging to eventually get diagnosed with MS.
C) I brought to his attention the current sx's that are bothering me at the moment, which are the following:
-tingling when exercising
He pretty much shrugged off the symptoms. He told me what I was experiencing was not heat intolerance (getting tingly when hot..blah blah blah). Didn't even mention anything about the floaters, (although he did say I was most likely suffering from migraines with the visual auras ive been getting). And he attributed my stiffness to "Aliens" lol.
So all in all, I feel somewhat better, but not fully relieved. I'm not relieved because I have another appointment. I know he said he schedules follow ups to be safe, but at the same time, the voice inside of my head tells me it's because deep down inside, he has a strong feeling i have MS.
He performed a full clinical, and everything checked out perfectly normal.
I really want to put this thing to rest, but I just can't knowing I still have to follow up with it. I know that's not the right attitude, but its what I have right now. Anyone else in a similar position?
