Left Ear acting strangely...brain tumor?
« on: July 07, 2014, 05:02:21 PM »
Afternoon all!

My greatest fear for the last couple months has been brain tumors, but for the last few weeks I've started to feel a bit better about it and not dwell on it as much. Today however I was floored by a realization that I seem to hear worse out of my left ear, and this has brought some of my fear raging back.

I was testing an audio tone generator with a friend of mine, and I discovered that I was not able to hear high frequency sounds out of my left ear at all, while my right ear could hear them fine. This actually seems to jive with another left ear symptom I've had lately, where in the morning right after waking it feels like my left ear is plugged in some fashion, like it's in a fish bowl or has water in it. The plugged feeling seems to dissipate after a few hours, but as I discovered today my left ear is distinctly weaker than the right even in the middle of the day.

Naturally discovering the above has fired my brain tumor fears up again, and I"m trying to push them down again, but I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this before? Is this something I should talk to my doctor about? Could it just be nasal congestion acting up in some way?

Thanks in advance

Really really doubt it's a brain tumor. Do you have any nasal congestion?

I did have a cold a few weeks back, and I do get a mucusy feeling during the day at times, with some congestion. Could that be the cause?

It's very possible. I have sinus issues and allergies and my nose gets stuffed up and my ear will feel a bit plugged or like something in it. So it could be allergies. If you don't feel any better then you can see your doctor cause it could actually be ear wax built up. Something simple I'm sure.

To me it sounds like it's fluid or wax build up in your ear. I highly doubt it's a brain tumor.
Like kmj said, I would get it checked out by a doctor. :)

I'll call my doctor tomorrow and see what they say, and report back. Thanks for the advice everyone, I hope everything is OK.

Just updating for anyone following, I called the doctor's office and described my symptoms, and they told me it was likely nothing to be concerned about, just the effect of nasal congestion left over from my recent cold. They told me to call back if it doesn't get better or gets worse, but I had a realization last night that hopefully will help, which is that I do get pretty congested when laying down, and the stuffed ear symptoms appear pretty quickly. I propped my pillow up before sleeping so the congestion would reduce and I woke up this morning feeling much better than the previous days! Hopefully the progress continues and I clear up the congestion in general soon!

Thanks for hearing me out everyone, this forum is always very helpful to me.

That's great! If need be you could also get an OTC decongestant to help. :)

That's good news. I'm wondering if that is my problem. I never can sleep with my head propped up cause my bed sinks. It's really old. I'm wondering if congestion could be getting in my ear and why I feel dizzy headed and congested a lot in the mornings. I've had this congestion for months and nothing has gotten it to go away.
