I was doing great...now here I am again...
« on: July 07, 2014, 12:23:07 AM »
I am convinced I have esophageal cancer. Trouble swallowing, weight loss, acid reflux. It sometimes feels like I can barely swallow food I eat, especially tough food like meat. Sometimes I cough, but I think that may be allergies. I don't know, all these symptoms match cancer perfectly and now I have shocked myself into a panic. I was doing so good too.

I have no idea what to do. The prognosis of people with esophageal cancer is so bad, and right now I just want to fling myself out of bed and go see the ER. Someone help please!

Hey there, just calm down. I know and believe that what you are experiencing is all from anxiety okay? I've felt those before. And thinking about them
More will worsen it. Just relax

Sorry that you are having a bad night. It could be just anxiety. Try not let your mind go that dark scary place. I know it's hard to. Just think rational. Calm your mind or the symptoms will intensify.

I am starting to calm down but the fear is still there because I have every single symptom of esophageal cancer and from what I have read my lifestyle, race, and gender all fall into the high risk factors of getting it.

I keep trying to say, "Okay but it could just be acid reflux and nothing else. There are so many other things it could be than cancer." But none of it will make the pestering thoughts fade. I just need to try to sleep I guess and call my doctor tomorrow.

Yes it could be many of things. Hope you can sleep and tell your mind to stop being so dramatic. I know it's easier said than done. Let us know what you find out from the doctor.

All these symptoms also match GERD alone, without the big C.

I have the same symptoms sometimes.

Anxiety can exacerbate the lump in throat/trouble swallowing as well.

I never seem to get bad acid reflux as far as stomach acid coming back up in my throat, though. My stomach aches sometimes and I get gassy or bloated after eating bad food but rarely do I get regurgitated acid. I have dropped 60 pounds over the course of two years and all I did was stop drinking soda and my new job is a bit physically demanding.

Sometimes it feels like something is stuck in my throat even when not eating. Sometimes it feels like mucus. Other times I do just fine with food unless I eat something tough like steak.

And rarely I will get a mild ache on each side of my Adam's apple. I try to contribute that to muscle spasms or just regular body pains because it happens randomly and doesn't hurt terribly bad.

The doctor took a look at my mouth and back of my tongue and throat. He said it could be inflammation from reflux and suggested Prilosec. He didn't seem concerned with any of my symptoms so I'm starting to feel a little better despite the anxiety creeping around me.

If you're having this much difficulty and discomfort, I wouldn't advise against seeing your regular doctor (not going to the ER).  I do not think you have cancer; I think you have anxiety and some other problem causing your symptoms, but if the symptoms themselves are causing a loss of quality of life, you should try to find out the real cause and treat that.  Likely reflux or allergies, both treatable.
