Lightheaded and Vertigo.. Ignore it?
« on: July 06, 2014, 06:53:50 PM »
So ive dealt with vertigo since I was a teenager. Im used to it at this point. However, a few months ago after traveling on a really turbulent plane ride, I experienced the worst vertigo of my life! I tried to manage to work, but it was so bad. At work however it got so bad I had a really bad attack, which triggered a panic attack and I thought I was going to pass out in front of everyone. It happened like three times. I went to the ER and was fine, just vertigo and saw my dr twice after that.

However- I cant seem to shake the fear now...I am obsessive over passing out. Whenever I leave the house I panic and think what if I pass out? what will happen to my kids... will everyone stare at me? It is so annoying! I have never passed out in my life and medically have no reason to. My blood pressure is high, so that would cause me to actually not faint. I just want to get over this fear. Plus the symptoms that come with it makes it hard to get it out of my head, I have vertigo frequently, and almost like lightheaded feeling, but more like I could just fall over. Its really hard to explain.

Like most members here I have had a huge list of tests done... EKGS, ultrasound of heart, CT scan of chest and lungs with contrast, Xrays, CT scan of head, MRI with contrast of head and neck, EMG, blood work.. ect ect... And there has never been anything wrong with me. Ive birthed two children and never passed out! I have worked 9 hours on my feet with 9 months pregnant and didn't pass out.. WHY am I worried about this now?

I want to be proactive about this. I want to fight it, I just need some advice.. Do I ignore these symptoms? IT is so hard when they are soooo intrusive... Just crazy intrusive thoughts.. How do I stop them?

Trying to figure out same thing. I think my vertigo type feeling is my from my allergies and sinus. I also have a fear now of passing out.

I'm in the same boat. I describe mine as more of an "off balance" feeling, kind of like rocking on a boat, but I'm not physically moving. It freaks me out! It seemed to start when my seasonal allergies did, so I've been assuming it's that, but it could be anxiety, too. Pretty much every day I have the inner battle of ignore it vs. get to a doctor. I'm so confused! I actually set up an appointment last week & then canceled it, telling myself it's nothing serious. But I'm just so worried about it that I feel like maybe if I finally do see a doctor I can put this to rest. I'm constantly missing out on things because mentally I'm thinking about this. It's awful. I'd like to know what I should do, as well. Ugh.

I would suggest just to see a doctor cause it could be something as simple as ear fluid, allergies, sinus infection, something like that. Cause me feeling like I was on a boat was coming from my sinus infection. I felt like the floor was moving under my feet and when I walked, I had a sense of imbalance that felt like I was walking on a trampoline or a boat. Anxiety can cause it as well. Anxiety made my sinus and allergy symptoms so much worse. Still is.  I would see a doctor or an ent since they are better at diagnosing this kind of stuff. Then it would put your mind at ease.

I had dizziness that lasted for 6 weeks every day when I would get up from a sitting or lying position. I Would also get dizzy when I would just lay flat on my bed and turn my head in bed. My ENT physician told me that sometimes crystals shift in your ears and this causes the dizziness. He said that is takes a while for your brain to adjust to this shift, but eventually it does, as mine did.

Marc - that's called benign postional vertigo and usually the ent specialist can simply put the crystals back into place with a special technique they use. But if yours went away on its ine that's a good thing. I thought that was what I had at first. Did you ever see anything spinning? Or was it like just feeling that your head was spinning?

The room would spin sometimes. He said in some cases it can cause big problems. He called my issue, a variation
of benign vertigo. I had symptoms that were not typical of BPV. I could just lay flat on the floor and not even move and the
room would begin to move. It got on my nerves as it was every day for 6 weeks. Sometimes I would have to hold on to a
pole, desk, etc. so I could keep my balance and not fall.

That sounds horrible. I hear it can be pretty freaky. Glad that it resolved on its own. :)

Thanks for the kind words. At first I thought I may crack up as it happened so often. I began to have to adjust my daily living
as I had to sit up in bed and then get up slowly, I had to be very careful when I walked up and down the steps as I always held the
rail, when I got up from anywhere, I had to do it very slowly as it happened with no warning. Some of my clients had no sympathy for
me as it happened durign tax season. It was really weird, as one day it just stopped as suddenly as it started. We were just on vacation
in Portland Oregon and I was at the front desk and the room moved briefly for a second or two I said I hope this crap did not start again
on vacation and thank goodness it did not. This taught me that life can change in a moment, just like when my mother, father and uncle all
passed away in a years time; very gut wrenching. I had to push on as what choice did I have anyway?

If you have been diagnosed with bppv, then there is this technique that your ent can do or maybe even a chiropractor or physical therapist can do. Have you checked into that? Of not, then go to YouTube and type in treatment for bppv.

I doth know you can deal with it every day. It is such a huge anxiety trigger for me. My sinuses and allergies are the blame for mine.

Even when I'm not dizzy I'm constantly in a state of worry that I'm going to feel that because it happens so often.  Most of the time it's only a minor feeling of dizzyness, but the fear of passing out or vomiting is what sends me into a panic.   But sometimes it will come and last for months and then just go away only to eventually come back again.   I've gone to the doctor so many times for it but nothing ever turns up.  Whether it's my primary doctor, an eye doctor, an ENT.   Seriously. SO many ENT tests with NOTHING ever turning up.  I almost wish it was vertigo so it could be treated.    I've started to accept that the feeling is all brought on by anxiety.    But like I said, even when I'm having a good day, or week, or month with only a little bit of dizzyness I'm in a constant state of worry about when it's going to come back and how much its going to disrupt my life.

I think that might be why you get that feeling. Maybe it's cause you think about it and worry about it and even if you don't feel you are, in the subconscious you will. I think that could be my case. Hard to tell since I do have allergies. I have same fear of passing out as well.
