Catarrh/mucus/phlegm in lower throat, won't budge
« on: July 06, 2014, 04:31:53 PM »
Hi board! I haven't been here for a while.  :action-smiley-065:

Anyway, my number one rule is don't google, but my second is to not wear out my welcome at the doctor's office, which is why I'm wondering if anyone here can shed some light on this before I break rule number two.

For a few weeks now I've felt as though there is some catarrh/nasal drip/mucus or whatever building up in the bottom of my throat, kind of around the hollow area. It just stays there and, sometimes it's okay, others it feels really thick and congested. I think it might be nasal drip but I'm not sure. Anyway, it makes it hard for me to breathe when lying down at night - I have to sleep semi-propped up. There's also a slight wheeze sometimes, but I know my chest is fine as it's been checked recently. I'm wondering if it's excess nasal drip, but why has it been happening for so many weeks?

Hot drinks can aggravate it. I was thinking I might have developed an allergy to something, but there really seems to be no pattern to this feeling. It's always there, only sometimes it's worse than others. There's no sinus pain. I've tried nasal and throat catarrh relief medicine but it's not making it go away.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

i'm no doctor but it might be severe mucus build up/globus. anxiety does that. i've had mine for months. almost a year. i've seen an ENT specialist & a gastro specialist as well. i even did an endoscopy. aside from very mild haital hernia & very mild gastritis nothing was found.

This could be a symptom of GERD.  Perhaps taking a PPI like Prevacid or Prilosec for a few days to see if the symptoms improve could be an idea to try.

I have the same thing right now. I have GERD, but I think it is really a product of anxiety.

Thanks guys, I will try to eat more slowly in the next few days and see if that helps. If not I will visit the doctor.
