Is this normal?
« on: July 05, 2014, 10:45:17 AM »
If you run your fingers thru your hair do you get some strands out? I feel like my hair is falling like crazy in the shower and when I run my fingers thru it I get like 4 strands. Is this normal? I am freaking out thinking I have a sinister disease. Anyone else?

Do you have blonde hair? Natural blondes shed a lot more hair than other colors. I am a shedding machine. I also think thyroid conditions have hair loss, but you would have other symptoms that would tell you there's something going on. If it's just shedding, you may have just noticed it more, or could be more stressed, causing the extra hairs to fall out. I don't know how I'm not bald with the amount of hair I shed.

My hairfall is crazy too. I run my fingers thru my hair a ton as a comfort thing. I'm a brunette with no thyroid issues. It's def anxiety related. Could also have something to do with your diet, not getting enough essential vitamins can cause that. But as long as you're not actually pulling your hair out on purpose then you should be fine. If you start to see a bald spot or clumps start falling out then go see someone. :)

My best friend owns a beauty shop, she is a hairdresser.  She said it is perfectly normal for people to "shed" hair in greater quantities at certain times.  ALSO stress can cause it to do that if it's a LOT (my daughter's got a LOT thinner due to stress!)

I agree -- stress definitely causes more hair to fall out. I don't think what you're losing is abnormal at all!

Also, during my 1st pregnancy, I noticed that I never shed hair in the shower. It was weird! Then shortly after my daughter was born, I noticed TONS of hair in the shower. Like, it was freaky! But I guess this is normal for some people. Probably hormones. Our bodies do crazy things sometimes!

I don't have any thyroid issues. I've had it tested many times.

As others have said, as long as you're not pulling it out, and there aren't any clumps, it should be stress related, or just something that you happened to notice that may have happened for a long time.
