Hi Kenzie, I'm a brintellix newbie myself.  Just started on 10mg a couple weeks ago.  Noted nausea as the most bothersome SE but that's been reduced since starting.  Other than that, some fatigue and mild start up anxiety.  Nothing sersious so far.  Feeling a little blah, but that's typical of my start up experience.

Serotonin syndrome is much rarer than Dr Google would have you believe. Few doctors have ever seen a genuine case. You won't develop it from taking SSRIs alone, not even in massive overdose. Almost all cases result from a SSRI being combined with either MAOI class antidepressants, illicit drugs which cause serotonin hyper secretion such as ecstasy, MDMA, etc, the opioid analogues tramadol, pethidine, fentanil, and methadone, or possibly the tricyclic antidepressants clomipramine imipramine (but not others).

Moreover, combining Brintellix (also Viibryd (vilazodone)) with those drugs is much less likely to cause serious issues as it blocks serotonin 5-HT2A receptors which inhibits the dangerous physical effects of the syndrome. Buspar (buspirone) is another med that blocks the 5-HT2A receptor which is why it is safe to take with SSRIs despite have some serotonergic activity of its own.

It might have contributed to why you need antidepressants, but it won't cause any problem with taking these meds. Drugs like MDMA cause hyper secretion of serotonin to the point neurons use up their energy reserves. This can trigger some cell death, but often it causes cell axons and thus the synapses at the terminals to be pruned which inhibits neurotransmission, and may impact how effective antidepressants are.

I'm on my 3rd day of this medication at 10 mg. So far I don't seem to have any side effects. How long roughly did it take for those of you on it to notice any improvement in mood/anxiety? As usual with antidepressants everywhere you look it says that it takes up to 8 weeks to feel full effects...but I'm wondering if you began noticing anything after a week or two.

One thing I've begun noticing already is that it's slightly reducing my depersonalization/derealization symptoms that I get almost everyday. Hopefully it continues to get better!

Like most antidepressants, Brintellix (vortioxetine) typically kick-in 3-12 weeks from when a therapeutic dose is first taken. There is some indication it may begin working earlier for depression, perhaps through a mood 'brightening' effect distinct from its stimulation of neurogenesis, but it might just be the placebo response. This seems to be less likely with anxiety, however, treating anxiety doesn't appear to be its strong point anyway.

Something that drew me to this medication was its studied effects on cognitive enhancement, irrespective of vortioxetine's treatment of depression which by itself improves cognition. The majority of my depression is from the hyper-awareness of my cognitive slowing because of the constant rumination and introspective obsessiveness over such subtle things that I know shouldn't matter.

Anyway, I'm really hoping this drug does something. It's been a long road of potholes and u-turns.

It'll be interesting to see if it lives up to the claim.

It's a pity the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Enhancer tianeptine (Stablon, Coaxil) isn't available in America as it might be the ideal med for you. Unlike most antidepressants it can be a fairly powerful cognition enhancer.
