anxiety high after doctor visit
« on: June 27, 2014, 11:39:55 AM »
I've been experiencing the same stomach problems as the last week--after just eating  a small amount, like a banana or granola bar, I feel so full I'm going to burst.  My stomach feels like a balloon blown up as much as it can go, that's about to pop.  I've been taking in under 1200 calories per day, and I have to force myself even to eat that much...then my stomach feels so tight, like it'll burst, I can't sleep all night.
I went to a doctor on Tuesday who just talked to me (no physical exam) and said it was probably acid, try a low-acid diet.  I sort of stuck to it but not that well.  Went to a different doctor today, she felt my stomach, said it feels tight like a melon which was odd because I'd only had a granola bar.  She said it was "probably" acid and to be serious about the low-acid diet.  I know it's a bit hysterical, but the "probably" freaked me out--like something more could be really wrong.  I wanted reassurance it wasn't stomach cancer and she said she couldn't know without an endoscopy, which maybe they'll do in two or so weeks if things don't improve.  Something just feels really, really wrong and it's hard for me to believe it could just be acid.    :(

Did you go to a GI doctor? did they prescribe anything for the acid reflux? I have acid reflux and gastritis and it makes me feel very sick. I can't east much and my stomach hurts, plus I get burning in my chest. I will call today and say that you don't feel well and that you would like to schedule an endoscopy. I had the endoscopy done a few months and all it showed was gastritis and inflammation acid reflux. Meds for it helps. But my symptoms were scary I thought I had stomach cancer. Believe me, you will be fine but again if it makes you feel better please call your doctor and request the test for your peace of mind.

Leah, this doctor was a general practitioner.  She recommended a probiotic and Prilosec.  I am sorry to hear of your experience, but glad to know you're fine.  And it helps to hear others out there with the same or similar symptoms that feel really scary, and end up being fine.  I think I'll hold off on the endoscopy for a week or so, see how it goes with the low-acid diet.

Wondering how you're doing - is the low-acid diet helping?

Hi Molly--
thanks for checking in and for your concern.  I had quite a week--I wasn't seeing any improvement with the low acid diet and on Monday was feeling very frustrated, so I took four antacids in addition to the prilosec I was taking in the morning.  I had hardly eaten anything and got very sick--threw up for about 8 hours.  I wasn't sure if it was related to the underlying problem, a result of taking too many antacids (I starting vomiting about an hour after taking the four), or less likely -- something completely unrelated.  I went to the ER but that doctor didn't shed any light on anything.  I then went to a specialist on Wednesday who prescribed me something stronger, called dexilant.  I now feel 100% back to normal.  I'm still supposed to get an endoscopy on the 16th, but I am thinking of cancelling if the improvement continues.
