Texting
« on: June 26, 2014, 01:44:08 PM »
Does anyone else find that the constant use of our arms and hands feeds your anxiety, say when texting or typing?  I have been spending time, unfortunately, focusing on how my hands work when texting and typing...and have noticed that my thumbs often do not move smoothly.  The movements are jerky, and the more I try to control or think about it, it seems to get worse.  My husband says its totally normal and that his do it too but he just doesn't give a crap about it.

Mine totally do that.

I've also noticed that my posture sucks since getting an ipad.  And it's made my ears ring.

On a sort of related note - I've recently discovered that chewing gun REALLY helps me with anxiety...  Not sure how but is totally helping me.  Maybe a nervous thing...

Yeah I have noticed the poor posture too...I am craning my next down all the time and holding my arms tense to hold these stupid electronics -- when a few years ago I wouldn't have been doing that a lot while watching tv and relaxing.  Thanks for your comment.

Yes that's the exact pose I'm in now...  I actually want to invent some kind of thing which will let me hang my ipad from the ceiling so it's right in front of my face and then control it with my thoughts so I don't have to crane over and keep my arms up like you describe!

I believe what I have is anxiety...occasionally a thought will cross my mind "what if???....." but most of the time i tell myself, anxiety.  It amazes me that my mind can do this.  It amazes me that how I think actually manifests itself through physical feelings, and that muscles actually become sore, tired, painful to touch, from a way of thinking.

But I often also do wonder why other people who don't have anxiety never notice any of this stuff.  My husband is a perfect example, so is my sister.  If I ask her to "test" something by moving it slowly and feeling how it feels, she often goes, "I totally feel that!  Why did you make me even think about it?"...but she lets it go as easily as she noticed it and doesn't question it again.

I think it's just that everybody deals with anxiety differently.  Ours is HA, but for others it could be anger, or certain phobias like agoraphobia, or could be alcohol or drugs, on and on...  For differing reasons we channel ours to hypochondria. There are usually triggers - for instance I always wanted to be like my dad, and it turns out he was a closet hypochondriac and I didn't know that until I was in my late teens and my grandma mentioned it.. And if had a hernia which went misdiagnosed for a long time..

Mind can do that simply because you are the mind, the mind is you, if you want to test it out, do a little experiment, check if you can swallow normally, ok, now, think of being unable to swallow, try to believe it, now try to swallow, if ypu did it correctly it should be much harder :)

That's interesting. My father also was a hypochondriac but never told anyone.  He went into medicine which I think helped, but now that he is older and dealing with cancer, he worries about every new feeling and every little thing and calls the doctors all the time.  It shocked me that he was like this and my mom was like he has always been like this but is used to being able to find an answer to every question -- now that he can't, he freaks out just like I have.

Sitting at the computer as little as possible is quite enough of the tech stuff for me.

If I had one of those texting objects I'd feel as if my mind and sense of autonomy were hijacked. I watch people on my walks, or in stores, or even in cars, and I am dumbfounded.

It can actually motivate some to be reactive and resist the invasion. Enjoy the walk in the park with the sky, sun, air, trees, birds, flowers, fragrance of cut grass.
