any alternatives that I can try before SSRI?
« on: June 22, 2014, 05:58:59 PM »
Hello

I was diagnosed with “free floating anxiety“ by my shrink.
the symptoms seems to fall into the GAD category.
he says using SSRI drugs may improve it.

but before I take a drug from the SSRI and get hooked on it for life I would to know if there is any non chemical drug that can help me.

here are a few stuff I am considering:
* Serotonin rich foods / Anxiety reduction targeted Nutrition
* Orthomolecular Medicine
* Magnesium + calcium + Vitamin D combo
* Omega 3 , Omega 6
* B-complex vitamins
* SAM-E  (S – adenosyl – L – methionine)   , L-theanine (amino acid),   Cysteine (amino acid)
* Zinc
* GABA  (Gamma Aminobutyric Acid)
* 5HTP   (5 Hydroxytryptophan)
* Withania somniferum
* Scutellaria lateriflora
* Rhodiola rosea
* Hypericum perforatum  (St. John's Wort)
* Ginko biloba
* Humulus lupulus  (Hops)
* Bach flowers
* Kanna
* Albizzia
I don’t have high hopes about the above but I thought I should ask here first about alternative to SSRI medication.

SSRIs are not addictive. They do trigger dependence which means they need to be weaned off, but that is true of many meds, including some heart disease drugs, even high dose vitamin C can cause rebound scurvey if stopped suddenly.

Your brain does not lack serotoinin, nor do antidepressants work by increasing the amnount in your brain. After a few weeks they actually reduce its synthesis and expression. See: Serotonin: The 'chemical imbalance' myth

* Omega 3

Omega-3 fatty acids do aid neurogenesis in the hippocampal regions of the brain, which is what antidepressants do, so supplements can be useful for mild anxiety and depression, but the effect isn't usually strong enough to ease more severe forms of these disorders. BTW-moderate exercise is about as effective as the Omega-3s.

* GABA  (Gamma Aminobutyric Acid)

Snake oil. Oral GABA can't penetrate the blood-brain-barrier (BBB). Not that it would help if it did. No reasonably well functioning brain lacks GABA. It is a by-product of the process that fuels the brain and is so abundant that the BBB has billions of tiny pumps to remove the excess.

* 5HTP   (5 Hydroxytryptophan)

No, because you don't need more serotonin in the brain, probably less. Plus, most of it won't even get into the brain. The grain makes and uses less than 2% of the serotonin in the body. The gut about 95%, and it will likely scavenge most of the 5-HTP for itself.

* Hypericum perforatum  (St. John's Wort)

as with the Omega-3s, it may be useful for mild anxiety and depression.

* Bach flowers

Very expensive water.

I won't bother with the others. They are unlikely to work except via the placebo effect.
