Worried About Mom (Blood in Urine)
« on: June 21, 2014, 10:16:48 AM »
Hi All,

It's been a long time, since I posted on this site but, back when I was having severe health anxiety, this site helped me a great deal.

Well, once again, I'm hoping someone here can put my mind at ease.

I am a male in my late twenties and the last year has been quite difficult. This July will mark one year since my father passed away from pancreatic cancer. His battle was rough and took quite a toll on my mother and I. That was, unfortunately, one of those times where my worst fears about health proved to be true. The stress and mental toll were unbelievable and, trying to adjust to life without him this past year has been hard.

I am an only child and am extremely protective of my parents and losing one of them was very difficult.

As most caregivers do, my mother and I neglected to get check-ups for ourselves during Dad's 15-month cancer battle since our lives were consumed with his treatments and doctor's visits.

Shortly after his passing, we began to visit our regular doctors and take care of ourselves again.

Last year, Mom went to her Dr. and a routine urine test found traces of blood in her urine. When a second test yielded the same results her general practitioner gave her an antibiotic for a possibly UTI. After finishing the regimen she was tested again and the results came back clean.

Well, a year has gone by and a recent test once again showed traces of blood in her urine. When a second test did the same, the Dr. suggested she see a urologist. What did I do? What I always do. I googled the causes of blood in the urine and now I have myself convinced that it's bladder cancer or some other kind of cancer/horrible disease.

Couple that with some strange little growth on her wrist that she's going to the dermatologist for on Monday, I'm practically beside myself.

The fact that her GP wants her to see a specialist is scaring the life out of me. All I can think is cancer.

After the horror it inflicted on my family I've had a difficult time feeling safe or positive again. Now that this is happening it's like I'm just waiting for the hammer to drop and throw our lives into turmoil once more.

Why aren't they trying the antibiotic again? Is it because the doctor thinks it's something more serious?

I don't know what will happen if it turns out to be something very serious. I don't think I could take it.

Does anyone out there have any experience with this? Please, share some positive words (even if you have to lie).

Thank you.

I've read through your entire post, and I'm very sorry to hear about your father, and the effect it has had on both you and your mother. I went through something familiar with a family member, and I can understand just how much it can affect your life.

To answer your question, this is nothing uncommon at all. Doctors typically take a 'better safe than sorry' approach. It's almost certain that this is a UTI again, but most doctors don't like just handing out antibiotics and hoping the problems go away. There might be a simple, underlying issue that is causing your mother to have two UTI's in fairly quick succession. A specialist might be able to better help her to understand why they're happening, and be able to analyze her to make sure there's no problems that need to be considered.

In short, a urologist is much better placed and experienced to ensure she has a clean bill of health. The doctor wants to make absolutely sure nothing is wrong, so has referred her to a specialist, to get a thorough check-up on the issue. It's nothing sinister, and there would be no reason for them to keep any suspicion they had of 'worse things' from you :)

I'm sorry about your dad.  I'm an only child too, and my dad passed about four years ago.  The first year really sucks.  It doesn't get better exactly, but you get used to it and learn how to deal with it better as time goes by.

As for your mom - I'd be freaking out too in your situation, for the same reasons as you.  I worry about my mom a lot now.  But your mom's blood in urine went away with antibiotics, which means she had an infection.  That's probably what she has again.

I am sorry about your dad. My heart goes out to you since we are going thru pancreatic cancer right now with my mother in law and it's the most difficult thing I have gone thru in my life so far.

As far a traces in the urine, I have that all the time. I suffer from UTI's and IC that causes traces of blood.... i have seen urologist, gotten different tests and they just found IC (inflammation of the bladder). My daughter had traces of blood in her urine a couple of weeks ago with no explanation. Doctors told me that sometimes happens in healthy people. She may just have another UTI.

hang in there, I know how hard it is not to think about the worse cause of it, be try to stay positive!!! :action-smiley-065:

My mom had blood in her urine that didn't clear fully with antibiotics so they sent her to a urologist. I feared cancer too, but it turned out to be a tiny kidney stone. They did a simple procedure to remove it (noninvasive) and everything cleared up immediately :)
