Anyone tried Gabapentin?
« on: June 19, 2014, 06:52:41 PM »
Hi, one med my psych mentioned is Gabapentin for GAD and depression.  I looked it up and it
seemed interesting though hadn't heard much about it before now.

Has anyone had any experience with the med?

Hi, one med my psych mentioned is Gabapentin for GAD and depression.

It is an anti seizure med which some benzophobic doctors prescribe instead of benzodiazepines. While some find it useful, many don't. If you want to go down that route then pregabalin (Lyrica) is better, if only because it has linear pharmacokinetics whereas with gabapentin effectiveness drops as the dose increases.

Lyrica was awesome, took it for sciatica a very long time ago, before being diagnosed and realizing I have anxiety, and I noticed it make me very calm. It made me super sleepy though, so I stopped taking it. It may be a decent add on to a first line antidepressant at therapeutic dose. Also, if you get headaches from your anxiety, or lots of tension, I noticed it helps with the aches and pains from those.

I had been on Gabapentin for a few months, and found it to be mildly effective for my anxiety. The benefit of it was that there were virtually no harsh side effects. However, there were subtle bothersome ones...I found that it made my depression worse, and also slowed my cognition down a bit. I was on 1,800 mg a day, and eventually went off of it due to these side effects. YMMV, and in my opinion it can't hurt to try. It's a mild medication, so you don't have much to lose.

Thanks.  Those who took gabapentin, did you take it for GAD?

I took Gabapentin for GAD and it made me depressed.  I would sort of go into this internal thought process and start thinking about negative things.  It completely eliminated my taste for alcohol (I drink some wine most nights) which was a nice side effect.  But I completely stopped talking to my husband and just wanted to lie down all the time (no GAD relief is worth isolating yourself from the world) so that was the end of that experiment!

Thanks, Snoopy for sharing.  Did you find another med better for GAD?

Lexapro + Klonopin works for me. Also therapy and self help books are part of the mix for me too. Keep trying on the medications, just give them a try (like Andrew90 says). Eventually you will find something that works. I have a bunch of friends on Lexapro, one who swears by Prozac and hated Lexapro. Everyone is different so unfortunately, you have to experiment to find out

I have spinal stenosis. It is impinging on a nerve in my neck so I'm pretty much in pain all day. Was taking Codeine but it caused constipation so then I started taking copious amounts of ibuprofen. My doctor doesn't want me to take so much ibuprofen so I have been prescribed Lyrica. I was surprised to read of the off label use for Gad. Maybe this will help two of my problems at once! Keeping my fingers crossed that it works for the pain.

Mishpaz, keep us posted! My coworker went on Cymbalta (kind similar to Lyrica) for severe situational depression and she also had very bad back pain (surgeries etc) and it worked! I asked her how she was doing one day (a few months after she started taking it) and she said she felt so much better. She went from having to lay down in her office everyday crying and in pain to normal again. Lyrica is even newer (I think) so hopefully that means better :) please keep us posted!

My coworker went on Cymbalta (kind similar to Lyrica)

These are two different classes of meds. Cymbalta (duloxetine) is a SNRI class antidepressant, Lyrica (pregabalin) is an anticonvulsant which may ease anxiety but is unlikely to do much for depression.

Insights, thanks for the clarification on Lyrica, I must have gotten confused when my dr. was talking about them.  He probably meant that they can both be used for pain or anxiety. Lyrica is one drug I haven't tried! But still keep us posted Mishpaz!

Just an update on klonopin.  It's working great for me.   For the past 6 weeks I've been on 1 mg a day.
It's returned me to normal.

I know my doc had mentioned Gabapentin as something to consider down the road.  But increasingly I'm thinking
klonopin is going to be my partner for some time.  I know I just must be careful not to over-indulge, etc.
Not a problem with me.  I take my meds with great precision.
