digestive disorders and anxiety
« on: June 17, 2014, 08:04:44 AM »
hi. Just wondering if anyone knows if digestive disorders can actually cause anxiety because of the serotonin issuesconnected to the digestive system. Thank you. Joe

I don't know about the serotonin connection, but I certainly think that my anxiety can exacerbate my digestive symptoms in a positive feedback process.  In other words, I have had stomach issues produced initially from anxiety that then become the focus of the anxiety which then amplifies the digestive issues.  At least that's how it feels, and when I can distract myself with other things, I can uncouple the process.

Remember also that anxiety can make your sensations heightened to what you're feeling in your body.

I don't know if any of this resonates with what you were asking.

I know anxiety can cause digestive problems. I vomit if my anxiety gets too bad, and I know stress increases IBS problems.

I am proof that digestive issues and anxiety are a vicious circle and connected. I used to rarely have any anxiety, then once my digestive issues started, the anxiety got worse. This of course made my digestive symptoms worse/more apparent to me. I'm still struggling with it.
