Anxiety going up as dr appt approaches
« on: June 13, 2014, 01:43:10 PM »
So i have my neuromuscular specialist appt on monday that i have been waiting 2 months for. Ever since monday I have been getting more and more anxious examining my body for new things to tell him. I dont want to miss anything!I have been doing really good, but some new things are starting to scare me.

I can only hope for the best! 3 more days to go.

You're braver than me!  What symptoms do you have that are sending you to a neuro?  My prayers and thoughts are with you... I bet you'll be on here Monday  posting that you're fine!

Hi! I do not know what your symptoms are, but I can assure you that your worry of something being missed is very low! Stop body checking as this will only worsen you into panic! :-) explain the symptoms calmly to your doctor, and remember that they went through years and years of medical school, and have specialized in the areas needed to take care of your problem! Do not be afraid! You will do fine!

thanks artsy! I know they wont miss a thing, i just dont want to miss the chance telling them every little thing im worried about to get it off my mind haha. i actually wrote it all down in a notebook to bring.

I have seen my regular neuro who treated me for migraines he suggested i see the specialist after doing tests with him including 2 emgs that were clean. but my symptoms still persist.

Nytviolet,

My symptoms in short description are atrophy (what i think is atrophy, huge chunk out my ass and calf muscle) weakness in my left arm now after having weakness in my right, my swallowing seems off and yea just the usual everything. but what is worrying me more now is that my hands shake a little when i hold them out  which is normal but its more in my left hand and my left arm is having the weakness and it feels stiff and idk sluggish which makes me worry about parkinsons haha. im only 26 but hey thats what anxiety does to us.

Jill, is the weakness clinical-weakness or perceived. Are you so weak as to be unable to do things you previously did.

I'd need you to tell me in more detail what's going on. Why did he perform the EMG? Did he detect weakness?

I went through your history and found the following compendium of symptoms:

-awkward grip feeling in my right hand -- Means nothing.
- then noticed right hand/arm was skinnier than left and my right is dominant arm -- Normal.
- then noticed that the right side of my body from my face to my foot was actually skinnier -- Normal.
- terrified over muscle atrophy. -- Cannot determine without pictures.
- my throat goes numb from time to time and i cant feel myself swallow -- Normal (happens to me).
- i feel like my speech is slurred at times and that my tongue just feels funny when i talk -- Normal (happens to me).
-i twitch all over my body and get crampy at time and definitely tensed up! -- Maybe not normal, but regardless is very likely benign.

I will make a number of assumptions here. Correct me if I am wrong.

Your neurologist found nothing remarkable during your clinical and your reflexes were normal.

Everything you have listed here is perceived. With 2 clean EMGs, being 25, and nothing notable returned during the clinical examination I would pose a very great likelihood that this is anxiety. Unless you have not disclosed some important detail or your neurologist insisted on the referral, I am not convinced of a pathological cause. If you noticed atrophy in May, it would be very odd if you have not exhibited REAL clinical weakness by now. Which I suspect you have not or your neurologist would have found abnormal reflexes (unless, I believe it's called PMA) and most certainly would've brought up a possible/probable *** diagnoses.

Did your neurologist say anything about the 'atrophy'?
'Chunks' and 'dents' are not atrophy. The entire muscle loses mass, not specific areas of the muscle.

Hey nom

I do have hyperreflexia 3+ no clonus but he did say that could be normal. Everything you answered is what i was feeling before which i do believe was anxiety. I started working out to make my dominant hand stronger because at the time my left hand was. But now my left arm has shrunk a little and i find myself struggling to curl a gallon o water that i had been exercising with that i could easily do before. Which is odd. And that feeling in my throat of not being able to feel myself swallow has been constant. And when i look at my tongue i see the wormy looking fasics but only when stickin it out and when i first open my mouth to look at rest but then it calms down. My neurologist did say "im not saying its not atrophy, im saying idk because your emg is normal" he sent me to specialist because he said 4 eyes is better than 1 and to ease my anxiety haha

I would think I would need to actually see video of your tongue.

It sounds odd, but truthfully, it's hard to trust your opinion of what it looks like since you're in a state of anxiety.

The reflexes sound a bit strange, too, with the addition of the twitching you're describing.

Looking at your tongue stuck-out is a generally bad indicator because everyone's tongue twitches while protruded.

What was your neuro's impression of the 'twitching' and strength?

Nothing here is definitive, I can tell you that. Has your neuro mentioned MND? I'm more interested in what he had to say.

I think it's a good idea for you to the neuromuscular specialist. Make sure to bring up every little thing to them as well. For diagnostics and your anxiety.

Anxiety may also cause overactive reflexes. It's the supposed 'twitches' you're describing that make the whole thing somewhat interesting.

Can you swallow liquid without aspirating? Tent your cheeks? Any ACTUAL slurring noticed by others? I don't imagine peripheral excitation (benign) to be limited to limbs, so it's possible your tongue is affected as well.

I want ShawnW in here for this one.

While I can give you a myriad of possible *** onsets, he's much better equipped to explain anxiety components.

It doesn't SOUND like ***. You have a number of things on your side. Foremost, your age. Next, no actual weakness (when you say 'harder to curl', do you mean fatiguing faster? Your atrophy is questionable. If it were caused by *** it would have shown up on an EMG. The only thing this could appear to be is PLS (which you don't want either, but it's better than ***; kinda) or a muscle disease -- both of which are also hugely unlikely, again, thanks to your age and lack of clonus (did you have a positive babinski?). If I had verbatim reports of what's happened at these visits it would be much more helpful (no offence, but you cannot trust anxious people to be accurate). If this has affected a large amount of muscle (which you think it has) it would VERY DEFINITELY show up on an EMG. Were the EMGs completely clean or abnormal in any way? What about nerve-conduction?

You've got me.
Have you had an MRI?

How anxious would you assess yourself to be truthfully? Are you tense?

Have your reflexes changed over the course of the time that he has seen you? Can you pull record of what your reflexes were documented as before?

Don't rule out anxiety-entirely just yet. Because it could be. My friend has a silent babinski in only one foot, twitches, randomly loses mobility in her hands, and has diminished knee reflex and she's fine. She's just an odd-one neurologically and maybe you are too (I'll add that I suspect she has MS, but she won't get an MRI; I'm not saying she does, she honestly could just be weird -- there is reason to think that she does not as her symptoms always resolve in minutes, but recurr).

Would it be possible to take a photo of your 'atrophy' without revealing, well, you know.

Have you done a Barium Swallow? And what exactly do you mean by, 'cannot feel'. Like numbness or like your throat isn't contracting? I've heard from one anxious fellow feeling as if it was 'too easy to swallow'.
