Urgent. Joint/tendon pain.
« on: June 04, 2014, 04:15:25 AM »
This is just getting bad. My hands are killing me. Definitely itching associated with the pain, but oh my god the pain's intense. I'm pretty confident the pain isn't muscular. I think it's isolated in my tendons and joints. Could I have done this by self-testing a week ago? I'm getting twitching fingers now, too, but this is unsurprising to me. I'm not sure why that part hardly concerns me. It feels too sharp to be muscular. My wrists/base of thumbs/thumbs/index tendon seem to be the worst. I can't decide if this is anxiety or I should see a doctor about it. The pain actually goes away periodically. When it's there it's bad. Bad. I think the tendons are also popping? When I was self-testing I was kinda going all-out and I'm not exactly a weak individual. Did I do this? Is this something that can happen with anxiety? It is stressing me out (noticing an increase in twitching; rigidity). I was doing really well about maintaining low anxiety until this caught me off-guard. It also presented in both hands simultaneously; leading me away from thinking it's something dangerous. It just hurts so much. When I lift my index finger it's almost like I feel the tendon drag across my hand. The pain is sharp or shooting. The 'twitches' feel less like 'twitches' and more like electricity. It is VERY similar to the pain I've had from going from extreme cold to warmth quickly. Like subzero to running my hands under hot-water. Even the itching is similar. This is another reason I think it's tendon/joint related.

Before I'm dx'd with 'oh it's just anxiety' I am only concerned about this issue because it's preventing me from relaxing, not because I fear arthritis or whatever (I don't, my fears are strictly those that are terminal).

Totally, probably, unrelated, I apparently have some gum disease goin' on. Great day. Really (not really). Further stressing me out. That, I'm outright refusing to see a dentist for (I already have too many health expenses and I dealt with it years back with no long-lasting adverse affect) so if anyone has any at-home remedies or advice I'd appreciate it if you'd throw that in as well (I will not use google for literally anything pertaining to my health anymore. Thus why I don't just look these things up).

If in doubt see a doctor. Little bit of an obvious answer. I think we all know our own bodies. Muscle pain can be a shooting sharp pain too. Although you may be feeling the pain in your hands the problem may be elsewhere. Sounds dumb I know. I had bad back pain last week. The answer to that lay not on my back. More down around the thigh area. Once I got that sorted out the pain went away. It was more like a knot. I fixed it myself using a tennis ball. But I would still suggest to visit a doctor if you are in great pain and you want peace of mind. I know that anxiety can cause a lot of pain in various parts of the body. Nothing surprises me with anxiety any more.

As for your gum infection. Just be careful with that. If not treated it could spread and become a lot worse. Your local chemist might sell something you can swirl in your mouth a few times a day. That is the first place I would look.

I will give you my story "in a nutshell" that might be worth considering.... I was put on two rounds of the antibiotics Cipro and Leviquin for UTI and had a terrible reaction some months later to the drugs.  (It's listed on the warning insert this is a possible)  Anyway the first warning given is that these drugs can cause tendon inflammation!!  This reaction went on for about 3 months thru many of my tendons and seems to hit both sides of my body at the same time..last a few days then move on to another set of tendons.  It was the most baffling and painful thing I have been through.  The most frustrating thing was the dr would not believe me since it was such a delayed reaction, and it took a visit to a specialist to finally get diagnosed correctly.  So I thought I would pass that along in case you have been on one of those drugs, (also know as Flouraquinolones.)  I don't recall having twitching or the electrical feelings you describe though.  I feel I am also on a life mission to expose the danger to these drugs.  I know not everyone will be allergic as I was, but the risks are something to consider.
I wish you all the best!

I don't know what you mean by self testing but if you did a lit of work with your hands then you may have strained your tendons.  I had a job a ways back that left my tendons in my hands and arms so inflamed that I literally could not move my fingers and had shooting pains that made me cry...and I am not a wimp.  I recommend soaking in warm Epsom salt water and , if you can, gently massaging your hands and forearms.  Ibuprofen will help with the immediate pain.  Hang in there!

This is not necessarily related to the original post, but thought I would second the comment about Cipro.  I too, was given the antibiotic for a possible UTI.  I was in the ER, so it first came through intravenously and then oral, once I came home.  I immediately began experiencing strange side effects, and stopped taking the meds.  For two weeks, everything was normal, but then my neck started clicking and has not stopped since (this was in Oct 2013).  Approximately, three months later I had what they called a "spontaneous toe sprain".  Prior to the sprain, it felt like my ligaments were tearing and popping in that toe constantly.  It was quite painful.  I will never take an antibiotic like that again.

I think the self testing won't have helped if there was any minor tendon issue already. I have been self testing my hand all day and it is so sore. But of course I believe it is all due to my dreaded fear which you know what is.
Give your hands a few days to heal and maybe try an anti inflammatory?
Re gum disease? How bad is it? Pre gum disease or has it already become it? I had pre gum disease in one area when I was at the dentist last. That one is reversal while you can have gum disease that isn't.
I have completely got rid of mine by having a very good teeth cleaning routine. Brush teeth, floss, interdental then finally mouthwash. Apparently flossing and mouthwash is key to preventing gum disease.

I got joint/tendon pain from taking...crap, can't remember which specifically it was, but one of the over the counter medications for acid reflux.  That's a possible cause.
