Panicking - woke up with vibrating in right ear
« on: June 02, 2014, 01:34:26 AM »
I am almost in panic mode right now. I woke up about 45 min and have had this constant vibrating sound in my right ear. At first I thought my cat was laying next to me purring in my ear because that is what it sounds like! It also sounds like helicopter blades. This has been constant since I woke up and has not stopped. I've never experienced anything like this before - can anyone help???

Actually, as weird as this sounds, yes, I have had this exact same thing a couple of times before. It's like a rapid muscle twitch, but in your ear canal. Try chewing gum, yawning, and otherwise stretching your jaw muscles/area around your ear and you should find that it clears up pretty quickly. It tends to happen to me most when I  have sinus congestion and/or tension in my jaws.

To add to this: I can't think of a single serious illness associated with this symptom. I went through a couple months of ear-related fears after developing tinnitus. Nothing sinister I ever came across causes a 'helicopter' sound. There's a variant of tinnitus that causes a pulsating noise, but helicopter? No.

So does this sound like tinnitus? I always though tinnitus was a "ringing" in your ears. This is definitely not ringing. It resolved after about 2 hours so I am hoping it doesn't come back :(

It's not technically tinnitus, but it can happen along with it. It's like an eye twitch, but it happens in your ear canal. You are hearing your inner ear/jaw muscles rapidly twitching, which causes your eardrum to vibrate. It's not serious and like you said it clears up by itself pretty fast, and if you try stretching your jaw, massaging the area, and relaxing those muscles it will clear up even faster. It's mildly annoying, but totally non-serious.
