Desperate For Help, Amoeba fear but hear me out
« on: May 31, 2014, 07:49:47 PM »
I went tubing on Wednesday, in brackish water in Texas. It hasn't been too hot lately so I wouldn't expect water temperature to be too high, it didn't feel it anyway.

I've had a headache ever since, though I had daily headaches before that as well.  I found a very very small bump on the backside of my neck just above the hairline, I'm worried that this is a lymph node.

I have an insane phobia of N. Fowleri, and I'm scared that this bump is a lymph node due to infection by this amoeba. I know I'm being ridiculous I know, but I cannot settle down! It's been 72 hours since possible exposure, this is my 3rd bout with this fear and playing the waiting game. I feel as if I'll go insane if I have to wait another 10 days to see if I'm still here and well.

This thing scares me like no other, someone please help!

I have no fever, do have mild headache, I do have a stiff neck but not the kind they say it causes. Last time I had this fear, both times previously actually, I somatisized this same stiff neck feeling so I think it could be that. I don't know where to go from here... If I turn out to be okay once again, I still have a major issue on my hands and that's anxiety.

False alarm on the swollen occipital node... I read some print wrong. The very tiny bump I feel is 2 inches below my hairline. The occipital nodes are like an inch above the hairline not below. So I'm not sure what this bump is...

From my research I see only 120 something people have even infected with this from the 160-2012. That is an EXTREMELY low number of people. Your stress and worry over this is causing your headache. There is no illness present in your body.

That last sentence may be incorrect because if it isn't the illness I fear it's the illness that's causing my fears... Anxiety!!! Lol.

Anxiety causes me to have neck pain and tension all the time. The lump is probably a sebaceous cyst; a fatty deposit under the skin. They are common and harmless. It might be worth asking your doctor about the lump if it doesn't go away, but it's not worth worrying about just yet because the most likely explanation is that it's harmless. I suppose it could also be a muscle knot if your muscles are tense.

Thanks for the input. I really hope it's just a knot but I don't think it is. I've never felt this there before but then again I wasn't searching there. It's crazy you know, I know how rare this thing is... 130 something cases in the US since 1960 but yet any chance is a chance in the mind of a hypo.

As it happens, I had a lump just like that on the back of my neck years ago and it turned out to be a sebaceous cyst. The doctor cut it out because it was infected and sore, and now, twenty years later, I still have a deep scar there. It wasn't that big of a deal, though, really. I think one you've experienced something like that personally, then you tend not to worry about it as much when you have it again because it's familiar to you. But when you've never had anything like it before, then you tend to imagine the worst case scenario. If I had another lump like that on my neck I think I would just assume it was another sebaceous cyst and not worry much about it, but if I'd never had one before I would probably concoct all sorts of imaginary scenarios ending in horrible conclusions based on it. Given your history of fear of this particular disease, I think it's extremely likely that you are just obsessing over a very unlikely scenario instead of a vastly more likely and much less serious one.

Day 4.5, no headache. Neck is stiff but that's kind of a norm for me and I'm paying closer attention. The bump on the back of my neck is still there. 4 more days until I can feel confident that I'm okay...
