All started with chest pain
« on: May 30, 2014, 11:19:35 AM »
Hello everyone! I am new to this message board and wanted to share my struggles that I have gone through for the last 4 months. It all started back in February when I got chest pain on the left side near my sternum. I went to my PCP and he said there was nothing to worry about. It was probably from stress. Then 3 days later I had chest pain that started by my neck and radiated down to the middle of my chest. I was scared and drove myself to the ER. Everything came back normal. Since then I have been to the ER 4 more times for chest/breathing and 2 for head injury (hitting my head did help). I have seen over 9 doctors. The best they came up with was Anxiety and Costochondritis.

I have had multiple EKG's, Echocardiograph, Stress test, multiple blood tests, breathing tratments, X-Rays, massages, back cracked and other tests. All normal.

I have been to the ER far too many times. I have been working with my PCP, seeing a therapist, chiropractor and now a sports medicine doctor. Now they donít think I have Costochondritis but a torn Labrum in my shoulder.
I am currently taking Zoloft, Klonopin (weening off after a month), Duexpis, Amoxicillin (infected tooth), Flexeril, Vistiral and Flonase (post nasal drip).

I get new symptoms every day.

Chest Pain: (In the middle or near the sternum usually) Dull, Achy, Sharp and Burning.

There was a short time where I would wake up in the morning and the top of chest near my throat would spasm.

I get shoulder and arm pain. Shoulder is near the arm pit and chest. Sometimes my forearms hurt. Tingling in my fingers and arms. I will get headaches that are on both sides. Neck and back hurt. Sometimes I get pain on my sides and stomach. There are days where I feel like I am having the flu or pneumonia. Sometimes I can't breathe and my throat feels like its sore all the time. My left side of my face has been somewhat tingling with a headache every day. My jaw was even hurting. I have gone back my doctor and he has no answer for me. They think it be caused by the tooth. I have chills that run from the top of my head to neck. The list will go on and on.

The worst thing about all of this is I am doing what everyone is telling me to do. I fought for awhile to stay off the medication but ultimately was put on it. Does it help for the anxiety? Yes, but I still have all the physical symptoms.

I have meditated, hot showers, baths, eating healthier, IcyHot/Tiger Balm, relaxation music, breathing techniques, CBT and just trying to stay positive. There was even a week period where I had weird intrusive thoughts. Those are gone. The only thing I canít do is exercise because they thought it was Costochondritis.

A little background too: I am a 29 year old male. I have always been an active individual. I have played basketball my whole life. All the way up through semi-pro level. I play sports all the time. Obviously over the years I gained weight and was not in top basketball shape. My blood pressure was high and my doctor was ready to put me on blood pressure medicine. So during all of this I have lost 30 pounds, havenít drank in 4 months with all the medication and my blood pressure is back to normal levels. Is life stressful? Yes but I was always able to handle it. I always got through things. Does it seem like I am searching for the Holy Grail? I have multiple doctors tell me that there is something physically wrong while my PCP is marking all of it as Anxiety. I will admit I did develop anxiety because of this. Any help suggestions would be great.

Thanks and sorry for the long story.

A lot of the symptoms you describe sound like anxiety.  Have they ever looked into stomach issues for the chest pain.  I only ask because my acid reflux causes chest pains and sore throats etc.  Muscle tension from all you are dealing with could be behind the numb and tingling feelings you experience.  When I get anxious, my hands and arms and sometimes even face can feel numb or tingly.

It sounds like you are doing everything you can to cope with it being either physical or anxiety.  In CBT have you worked on the concept of acceptance?  Learning to accept the symptoms as part of my anxiety and not anything wrong has helped me a lot in managing my anxiety and panic attacks. Knowing that they are part of my anxiety and can't hurt me has been a tremendous help in allowing the fears to pass quicker.

Thank you for the reply. My PCP said I didn't need to see a GI specialist. I was on Prontix for a month but it didn't notice anything. Also the Duexis is for stomach as well. The chiropractor had me do a cleansing that didn't do much either. I was getting liticain injections in my back to release the tension as well.

As far as the CBT I have been accepting that it is anxiety and I am not having a heart attack. The symptoms seem a little worse after I hit my head a second time in less than two months as far as the face pain goes. But again my PCP has told me that I didn't receive a concussion and has ruled that out. Now the sports doctor may think differently. I want to get past this crap and move on with my life. The only good thing is I am able to sleep and go to work but it sucks sometimes.

Glad you are working on acceptance.  Health anxiety is a tough nut to crack.  One thing that my doctor told me that helped me a lot is that the human body is a difficult place to live.  It is full of feelings and sensations that even doctors can't always explain.  She was right and the anxiety arises due to our fear of uncertainty and feeling a lack of control in our very own bodies.  Remembering this helps me get through some of the rougher times.

my diagnose my chest and rib pain was also acid reflux...and get this my 8 year old brother was also having chest and rib pains a few days ago before he had a huge waste release, so its definitely related, but i understand the worry as this was the reason my anxiety got out of control too..now i dont care, i work out till im exhausted and have stopped the fear of dying..whats the point? When it happens it happens...start living!!

I have found that if you go to a sports doctor, they will think your ailments are sports related. If you go to an internalist, they will think your ailments are a chemical imbalance, and if you go to a chiropractor, they will think it is caused by a misalignment of your spine. That's not because they are dishonest, but because that's what they have studied to diagnose.

When you're trained as an artist, the world looks like something to paint, and when you're trained as a safety inspector, you find safety violations everywhere.

While good at their specialized fields, none of those specialists are trained to spot the symptoms of generalized anxiety because it falls outside the scope of their training, so they don't recognize them for what they are. This is where your general practitioner has a bit of an edge on the others, because he has seen a wide variety of ailments and can better categorize them.

My wife once had chest pain for months and they could not figure out why.
It turned out to be a twisted stomach polyp which was caused by the reflux
medicine she was on.

Well to make things worse my father unexpectedly passed away a week ago from an apparent heart attack. He was only 64. You can only imagine what I am going through and my thought process. I still believe that my heart is fine but it doesn't help that my father just died from a heart attack. I some how manged to get through all the funeral stuff without even having to raise my klonopin. I did find out that I do not have a tear in my shoulder and they are sending me to Physical Therapy for a neck strain. I still have chest pain, neck pain, and mid back pain. I feel like they are just guessing now. On the upside, I am starting to taper off my klonopin and only seeing my therapist every two weeks now. I hope all of this crap will end and I can continue to live a normal life. I feel so held back. Anybody else have any suggestions.
