Mole paranoia -- starting to freak out.
« on: May 28, 2014, 01:42:29 AM »
I have this 1-2 mm mole, it's absolutely tiny. It's symmetric and has clean borders. Over the past few months I've noticed it's gotten darker, and a tiny lil bit (I really mean TINY bit) more raised.

I don't even know if I've noticed it get darker or if I think I have...

There used to be a hair growing out of it - there isn't anymore.

I went to the university doctor. She told me to absolutely not even waste my time going to the dermatologist and that it looks very safe and that moles change over time over the years.

Should I go to the derm, or should I just cool my jets?
I'm continuing to watch it.

I'm not going to be dead in 6 months am I?

Hey bertybotts,

I don't have much experience with moles, (even though I have plenty of them!) but if your University Doc told you not to even waste your time going to the dermatologist, I would feel relived.

But if you think what the University Doctor told you doesn't fully put your paranoia to rest, I would go to the dermatologist just for peace of mind, though.

I'm sure you're perfectly fine and you'll definitely still be alive in 6 months!

Thanks! She said it looks totally normal and since I've had it all my life, it's nothing to worry about. She said cancer can make it darker but she said it wouldn't grow like that. It wouldn't be round.

My internal medicine and GI physician told me that everyone should go to a dermatologist for a skin exam as they are the
experts.

I would go to a dermatologist if you think it's changing!!!!!!!!!! They will biopsy it and that will be that!

I wouldn't say ridiculous, but it's very probably just a mole.

Bertybotts,

I am sure if the Dr. doesn't think it is anything then it should be just fine.  If it would make you feel better make an appt. to see a dermatologist and then once a year after that.

I have mole paranoia ever since a biopsy of a severely atypical mole.  If I went to the dermatologist every time I found something "suspicious", I'd be there SEVEN days a week.

But, yes, it's good practice in general, to have a skin exam every year, and 6 months optimally.  Your mole, however, does not sound concerning - at all.

One day, recently out of the blue, I became hyper focused on a small mole on my leg.  I stared at it all day long with my iPhone flashlight, making many trips to the restroom, at work, to inspect.  I could SWEAR that it was more raised, and darker, with darker spots coming out of it.

Strangely, now it seems fine and back to normal.  I don't know if these things flare up, or if I get hypochondria-eyes.
