Can an ingrown hair cause a lump under the skin?
« on: May 26, 2014, 02:56:18 PM »
So I have a lump in my armpit that's kind of rubbery and movable. At first I thought it was a lymph node which really freaked me out. I recently noticed that there is a very tiny black dot at the end of it and when I squeeze it, I also see a white colored dot. I think it looks like it might be an ingrown hair but the lump is about 1.5 cm right under the tiny black dot and I was just wondering if an ingrown hair could cause a lump that size... ::)

an infected ingrown hair could. Just an ingrown hair likely wouldn't do that... Well there was this one time when it did. That guy's ingrown hair had to have been two feet long it was the most disturbing thing I'd ever seen.

I've gotten ingrown hairs the size of those giant marbles you use to shoot at the smaller marbles.  This is a really awkward comparison, but if you know the ones I mean, you get what I'm saying.  They're a bit smaller than a superball.

In other words, yes, that could definitely be what you're feeling.  Mine tend to be very painful, at least until they pop, but I don't know if that's a universal thing.

I have gotten them on my inner thigh close to my bikini area. I to freaked out thinking it was a lymph node but days later it got a large white head and popped (gross I know sorry) now I will get them periodically in the exact same spot. It could also be a cyst. Mine are usually sore to squeeze. They will swell more when squeezed and be smaller when left alone. Mine took up to 2 weeks to completely heal and the lump be gone.

I get these from time to time.  I think mine come and go during periods of stress.  Sometimes they are very painful.  If you already see a "white head" forming, what you might want to do is put a warm, damp washcloth on it for about 10 or 15 min a couple of times per day if you can.  This will bring it to a head and allow it to "pop".  Total relief afterwards.

Sometimes they don't form a head and go down when your body is finished fighting the infection.  I am at the end of one of these myself right now.

Best advise other that the above that I can share is try to resist the urge to "pop" it until it looks like it's about to pop on it's own.  You can push the infection further down and make things worse.

Good luck !!

I second the warm wet washcloth recommendation.

I found out about a way to keep a hot compress hot longer.

Wet a washcloth, put it in a plastic baggie (leave it open) and microwave it for 60 seconds.

Seal the bag (be careful handling it; maybe use an oven mitt) and wrap the whole thing in a towel.

It stays VERY hot for the entire length of time you need to apply it, so you don't have to keep rewarming it.

Just be careful none of the hot water leaks out onto your skin.  Learned that one the hard way.

You should clean it out every time you re-warm it. Doing what you do, while likely harmless, is creating an incredibly good environment for bacteria growth.

Well I don't as a general rule leave it lying around sitting in a bag from here to eternity.  (Although that might actually be where it is now...god my house is a mess.)  And it never directly touches skin - it's too hot for that.
