sore left tonsil
« on: May 25, 2014, 08:54:49 PM »
For the past week, I have been dealing with a bit of a sore throat. My throat was red and I seen a few tonsil stones. I went to the doctors who swabbed the back of my throat for strep. Came back negative. I am a bit congested though, no fever or headaches. So today, its now painful to swallow in my left tonsil area. I never had a sore throat longer than a few days. Im doing the salt water gargles and throat lozenges to minimal success. Does anyone know whats causing this?
SYMPTOMS

STUFFY NOSE
REDDISH TONSILS AND THOAT(WITH COBBLESTONE APPERANCE IN THE BACK OF TH THROAT)
PAINFUL SWALLOWING BY THE LEFT TONSIL

Any help would be appreciated

Sounds very typical of a viral infection to me. It's strange that the lozenges don't see to be helping much, but I don't think there's anything to be worried about there. Perhaps you should speak to your doctor again? It might be something you can get medication for :)

I guess because I dont have a fever or swollen glands, they didnt seem concerned. The Doc also put his fingers on my tonsil looking for an abscess and said it wasnt that either

Yeah, I'm sure your doctor would've known if it was something to be worried about. Being stuffed up can cause you to breathe more heavily through your mouth - to compensate for a lack of airflow from your nose. This can cause redness and soreness in the throat and tonsils, particularly if your throat and mouth become dry. It's typical with colds, flu, sinus issues.

Drink a lot of water. Maybe try a decongestant for your nose - if you can get your nostrils cleared, your throat is likely to be less irritated. I always found that cold milk and ice cream really soothed my throat as well. Other than that, it's likely just a matter of time.
