Hand going numb in my sleep
« on: May 21, 2014, 03:26:36 PM »
Hi All,
Like many anxiety sufferers I wake up multiple times during the night. For the past few weeks, about 2 or 3 times when I do wake up, my right hand is completely numb. At first I thought I had been sleeping on it, but when I started to pay attention the past few nights, I realised that I had not been sleeping/putting pressure or weight on this hand, yet I was still experiencing the numbness. It goes from the finger tips up past my wrist.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.  - AnxietyZone member Sixpack

I wake up with my hands numb A Lot. When to the chiro and he said its coming from my neck. I also have pain in my wrists and hands sometimes. It's getting better with the adjustments but I am not 100% yet

Did your chiro say what the cause is?
Saying it's coming from the neck, but what's the reason behind it?

I wake up a couple of times a month and can't move my arm - at first it was scary now i just sort of laugh about it - weird feeling trying to move it but can't - sure enough 30 or 40 seconds later it comes to life and i go back to sleep.

he said it could also be a pinched nerve. I used to wake up almost every morning with my hands numbed. I started seeing the chiro 3 weeks ago and now they only get numbed maybe twice a week if that, so it's getting better!!!

I'd be surprised if I DIDNT wake up with a numb hand or arm lol.  You've obviously got a nerve trapped in the neck of thoracic spine. The fact that it doesn't stay numb all day means it's nothing serious.

So, maybe carpal tunnel or a trapped nerve? Liklihood of it being something more serious? Should I go to the doc to get it examined first?
I gotta tell ya, when it happens, it's pretty scarey.
Yeah it definitely doesn't happen during the day, only at night. Although I'm not sleeping on my hand, could I be putting pressure on it in another way, like having it bent at the elbow could be trapping bloodflow or a nerve? I see that some people with carpal tunnel tried sleeping wearing a splint, has anyone here tried that?
