Colonoscopy tomorrow
« on: May 19, 2014, 01:59:36 PM »
Hello I am having a colonies opt tomorrow because I have low iron and they need to rule out bleeding in my colon. I also have IBS with pain and diarreah. I am 37 and had a colonoscopy done about 6 years ago.
I told myself I wasn't going to get to nervous because its more from precaution but I am finding myself getting into the what if trap.
Please please have me in your thoughts. I really hope there is nothing sinister growing inside me.

Good luck!  I know it's hard not to get nervous, but it's going to be okay!

Hi Leah,
I went through the exact same thing 2 years ago.  My stored iron count was 3 - very, very low!  I had the colonoscopy and all was clear, proving the low iron was from years of heavy periods.  I take an iron supplement every day and my iron count is now excellent.

Please keep us posted and good luck!

wow my ferritin is also 3!
I went to the gyn, because of the heavier periods, got u/s and found 3 cysts in my ovary. My hormone test was all normal. I had endoscopy last September that found some gastritis. My GI doctor thinks he won't find anything, I hope he is right, and that all my symptoms are due to IBS and that the low iron is due to the periods.

I'm due for my baseline colonoscopy (almost 50 y/o) in a few months.  Can you tell me what it's like?  Any discomfort involved?  I know you have to drink that awful stuff, but are you in any pain afterward?  THe reason I ask is because I'll need to plan my work schedule around it.  Thanks :)

I take Nature Made Iron 65mg equivalent to 325 mg ferrous sulfate.  You can buy this at any drug store.

Some people get stomach problems from these iron supplements but I have been fine.  Also, you need to know that iron will turn your stools very dark so don't panic!

Let us know when you get your good results (which you will!)   :action-smiley-065:

I had absolutely no problem with the prep or the procedure.  I actually felt light as a feather being so cleaned out!  For me, the anesthesiologist had a hard time finding the vein in my hand to start the IV...that was the only discomfort that I felt before or during the procedure (which I don't remember at all).  I woke up feeling great.

My only advice to you would be to resume eating slowly...don't do what I did which was to go out and have a HUGE breakfast immediately after the procedure.  After not eating for 2 days (essentially) it was too much for my system and I had terrible gas pains.  After a day or two, though, I was good to go - and very relieved that it was all over.

I would not hesitate for a split second to have another colonoscopy.  When I recently had bleeding from a hemmorhoid, I did not panic because I had peace of mind from this procedure.  It is so worth it.

I also take the iron with vitamin C...it helps with absorption.

Even if they find something you had one six years ago. It takes polyps ten years to turn into cancer I believe. You're more than fine. I had one last month because of bleeding and family history. Nothing bad.

Everything went well yay! My colon looks great! The doctor took some biopsies to rule out microscopic colitis and some stool samples to check for infection. But he said everything looks great! Thank God! and thank you all for your support!

The prep wasn't too bad actually.... but yes eat slowing after the procedure. I just came from from the procedure and had pasta with mussels and clams, maybe not the best choice and my stomach hurts a bit right now. It's gas pains, which is normal after the colonoscopy.

Well so in conclusion my low iron is due to my periods.... I am having my second iron IV infusion tomorrow. I feel a bit of more energy already with the first one!

Good luck to the ones who will get a colonoscopy soon!!!! BTW I love the Anesthesia LOL.... I feels like an awesome deep sleep! I know it sounds kind of creepy but it feels good LOL!
