Shortness of breath, anyone?
« on: May 15, 2014, 07:35:01 AM »
I have been getting shortness of breath with activity as simple as going up the steps, this comes aloing with increased heart rate. I have low iron but my hematologist told me it's not from that. She knows I have anxiety and told me it's from anxiety.....
does this make sense? anyone else has this? Sometimes I feel like I can't breath enough.....
I wonder now if there is a problem with my heart or lungs.....

Please please tell me I am not the only one!  :traurig001:

Anxiety based shortness of breath does not require activity to trigger. So, you should check into COPD (did you ever smoke?).

When this happens to me, I get freaked out even though I know intellectually that it is not real.

• Drink some water
• Use a humidifier and stick your face in it and moisturize your lungs
• Take in a giant lungful of air thru your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth until your lungs are completely empty. Do this a few times.
• Try some anti-anxiety medication, prescription or not. It may help you psychologically if not in reality, so that is a solution.
• Distract yourself by posting here and use a hotline if neccesary.

I have shortness of breath too, almost daily. I've been to lung doctors and heart doctors and the like. They all say it's anxiety, I still have a hard time accepting that when I feel like this though, my lung doc described it as psychosomatic dyspnea.

"I have low iron but my hematologist told me it's not from that. She knows I have anxiety..."

How can a doctor, without making any further and deep investigation know something?
I would check the lungs and the heart in order to rule out any physical issues to your SOB.
