Psychiatrist ordering genetic test for antidepressant
« on: May 09, 2014, 01:31:12 PM »
My doctor is ordering me a genetic test from assurexhealth.com or something and he's been using it recently for his patients with success.... It's supposed to tell u what medicines at what doses would work. Idk if it's gonna be one hundred percent accurate but as someone who suffered adverse reaction from an antidepressant it makes me feel a little more comfortable ..... Anyone have any experience with this?

I wonder how big the kick-back is? There is no evidence that these tests indicate anything worthwhile, and at least one big study showing it is at best only a placebo. I wouldn't be paying for it.

NOTE: I'm not a doctor, and particularly not yours, so there may be factors I'm unaware of. Therefore all advice is of a general nature and you should consult your doctor before following any of it, especially before changing med doses.

I mean it takes your CYP liver enzymes and measures them through DNA. Which would give a better insight into what kind of metabolized you are which should be pretty accurate for a target dosage .... And maybe better determine what meds to try via your metabolic rate .... Idkk, I'm not paying for it my parents are so it can't hurt to try

My pdoc ordered my CYP liver enzymes checked on my request; I have trialled some many medications and have not found any antidepressants to be effective for very long.  It turns out I am an intermediate metabolize for CYP 2D6, so I metabolize most AD's more slowly...  it certainly explained why everytime we increased a dose of an SSRI i became more jittery.

I personally don't think it's quackery at all, but your pdoc will really need to know his psycho-pharmacology to use the tests as an adjunct to choosing/dosing your medication.
