Can a lack of sleep cause minor brain damage?

I didn't didn't sleep for like 16 hours, then I went to bed and now I've woken up and I feel like *****. I've heard that sleep deprivation can damage the brain. Is it possible that I damaged mine?

I hope 16 hours without sleep doesn't cause brain damage, because I've stayed up twice that long in the past!  Medical interns often go 24 hours without sleep.

Not sleeping for five straight days probably wouldn't be good for you.  16 hours is a normal amount of time to be awake.  You probably just feel crappy because you slept too much or not enough.  Or you might be a little dehydrated, etc.  You'll shake it off as the day goes on.

No. College students (myself included) pull literal all nighters all the time for papers and such. I'm fine. They're fine.

Just try not to make a habit of it. Anything in excess can be detrimental to your health at some point and even then, actual brain damage seems like a very unlikely outcome...
