Pancreatic Cancer (PC) Fear
« on: May 07, 2014, 12:58:55 PM »
Hello,
I had a blood cout yesterday that showed a lipase at 96 (max : 60). Today, it is at 170.
I was always feared about PC and had a CT SCAN last october that showed nothing (after I started to freak out because my lipase was at 70).
Today the gastro proposed me to do an ultrasound (scheduled on Friday) and even an MRI (not scheduled yet).
I am just super scared (I am 41, man, ex-smoker).....

I too have high lipase, I am asymptomatic with no pain, no aches, no nausea, no weight loss or anything else that comes with pancreatic disease.

What made you get tested for lipase in first place - did you have abdominal pain?

Btw, my lipase was found incidentally  because I had blood in stool, after colonscopy it turned out to be hemorrhoids. However they tested for lipase (not sure why since i had no pain) and mines was 1700!!!!!!!

For over 4 years it fluctuates from normal, mildkly elevated or sometimes 4x over, for no reason. I seen 5 gastros, 3 pancreas specialist and countless docs. I was finally dx with benign thing called microlipasmia, something like that. I had ct scan, ultrasound, MRCP and countless blood test. I also emailed pancreas specialist around the world and they rountnely see high lipase numbers all the time and give a patient a huge work up and dont find anything. Even following up with them years later, still noting.

Smoking can elevated lipase numbers but does not mean it's damaging your pancrease. Skip the CT scan and ask for MRI(MRCP) or EUS.

95% of healthy ppl have normal lipase numbers but 1 out 20 will have funky numbers, this goes for different types of blood work too.  So think about, I had 1700 (and docs said it was not acute pancreatitis) 4 years ago and Im perfectly healthy.

Many thanks for jour answer !
I have irritable Bowel Syndrome since 20 years. When I first ask to check for lipase it was last fall (because I started to have kind of sticky stools).

Just had my Ultrasound. My gastro was super nice and text her before to tell her about my HA. As I am skinny the pancreas was clearly visible and she did not see anything weird :-) She was very professional and took time to look at it.
Still, she agreed for a MRI (scheduled in about 3 weeks).

That's good news.

I also have IBS confirmed from colonscopy, I was clearned of any IBD (chrons, uc) and also took a celiac test. I've had loose stools (not so much sticky) due to my poor diet of soda and high red meat intake.

What did doc say about the lipase. Years ago when I first found out my lipase test was elevated for no reason, I would test everyday using Quest Diagnostic, my numbers from M-Thurs (35, 42, 36, 138, 50, 70, 37) and cutoff ref range was 62, I believe.

One thing I did notice since I stopped marijuana smoke and went to vaping, my numbers were always low.

I wonder if your IBS with gut issues on top of tobacco smoke contributed to mid elevations of lipase. Also have you ever had an acute pancreatitis attack before in your life? Double down with pain, couldt eat for days, etc..? If not, you definietly do not have CP and pancreatic cancer is a no no. Once you have MRCP done, go celebrate because I know it will be clear.

Thanks for jour answer.
My doc and gastro are not that worried (because I have no pain and do not have other symptoms). I also never had any pancreatic attacks. But they were really really nice. I habe a new blood count on monday and I am a bit scared that it goes again up.
Btw, I gave up smoking 6 years ago and was not an heavy smoker.

Yea now that lipase is done more routinely compared to last decade, im starting to see more ppl online with high lipase without any symptoms and still had to go through full work up.

Blood count tomorrow (and MRI in less than three weeks).
Hope my lipase level will not be high (I have a pretty busy week at work).

What was reference range?

Different labs using different ranges because some use different equipment.
