Dry Throat
« on: May 03, 2014, 09:18:42 PM »
hey guys, just wondering does anyone know if anxiety can cause a dry throat/cough? i've been coughing for the past 2 days and have the lump in my throat feeling, it feels as though i've been producing a lot of mucus and its sitting in my throat. Can the nervous habit of coughing/clearing your throat too often lead to the dry throat feeling and the urge to constantly cough? Its very irritating and if it is my anxiety causing this i'll have to stop clearing my throat or it'll surely get worse

Yes, it does. The more you do it, the more you damage your throat. Not in a dangerous way mind you, but enough to cause irritation. By clearing excessively areas will start to swell - again, not to any dangerous extent - as part of the healing process. this creates the lump feeling. The lump feeling makes you try to clear your throat and a positive feedback loop begins.
