Why Can't I Believe the Doctor?
« on: May 01, 2014, 11:20:22 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have been obsessed with my nose and bloody mucus since last September. I have been to my ENT numerous times, had a CAT scan, exam after exam, scopes up my nose, etc. and he assures me nothing is wrong. When I blow my nose I get blood in the mucus most times I blow my nose, which is usually just once a day. The amount of blood varies but every single time I see it I panic! :( I begged him to cauterize me but he said my blood vessels are fine and there is nothing to cauterize. I use a bottle of saline spray a week and he said I can use that as much as I want as it only adds moisture and is not addictive. I use a cool mist humidifier in my room each night and a warm mist each day in the living room. He said I am doing all I can to add moisture and that this winter was so bad it is to blame. I barely turn the heat on anymore as I am afraid of the dryness.

So how do I overcome this fear? The blood in my mucus happens almost each day. He told me I am fine but I still panic. :(

Thank you. :)

I went through the same thing, and yeah, it's hard to believe the doctor.  But my doctor was right and yours is too.  What ended up working for me was putting vaseline in large amounts up my nose.  Eventually the bleeding stopped coming back.  (I remembered a friend of mine used that to stop a nosebleed once and I was getting desperate.  I guess it moisturized whatever was dry up there, because it worked!)

I think the answer is that if the doctor is right and you did believe him you would have nothing else to worry about. That can frighten some people. They are used to living with their anxiety. If they get a day without any anxiety they actually think something must be wrong. So they look for things to be wrong with them. To feel normal again. Normal to them is anxiety. You are used to how you feel. To some it would be a joy to be rid of their problems. To others it would actually be a nightmare. So they question their doctor. They don't want to believe him. Normal thing for an anxiety sufferer.

What is happening is akin to "Pavlov's Dog" (conditioning) - you know the story of the experiment where Pavlov would ring a bell, then feed the dog... then after only the bell would ring the dog would start to salivate because he was conditioned to getting food after hearing the bell?  Well, logically you KNOW you are OK, but after being worried about the blood for so long, now when you SEE it your anxiety rev's up because you became "conditioned" to that feeling and fear when you saw the blood.   No matter how many specialists tell you that you are OK your inner self can't believe it (although your logical self can)
I had a mucus retention cyst on my tonsil and my throat on that side would get a funny burn feeling into my ear about once a day for a few seconds.  I was convinced it was the cyst and that it really WASN'T a mucus retention cyst, so even after the doc said what it was and it was nothing, every time it burned I freaked out.  Well that cyst has been gone since December and I STILL get that funny burn and do you know I still get an anxiety reaction when it happens?  I KNOW the cyst isn't there, but I immediately think of it and my subconscious takes over.

mollyfin - I use Vaseline too and I still get it, urgg  :fragend005: I will keep using it though as it can't hurt my doctor said. Thank you for your reply. :)

Cuchculan - That makes sense and how sad that is though. I am going to be seeing a therapist beginning in two weeks so perhaps she can help me help myself with this. Anxiety is just awful. :( Thank you for your reply. :)

Sunlover - Our subconscious minds are too powerful ya know?!  :sprachlos020: Mine needs to settle down fast here but I have learned from reading here on this board that it takes a long time for that to happen even after the anxiety goes away. I will just keep trying. Thank you for your reply. :)
