I went to my first yoga class the year after 9/11. Could not deal with that tragedy, that sea change for our country and much of the world, as it turned out. The physical exercise translates to mental benefits along with the bodily benefits. The emphasis on healing breath, stretching in all directions, strengthening bones, focussing on the all important spine, on maintaining balance, are all basic to yoga.
Still go to classes twice a week and practice on my own to a variety of music. It is a prelude to seated meditation. Together they help me to cope, stay positive, stay strong, stay hopeful.
