Just Got A Neuro Referral
« on: April 10, 2014, 08:05:07 PM »
So nervous. My doctor says I'll probably be able to get into the neuro he uses in about a week. I'm fearing that he may find something bad. I'm looking forward to putting these fears to bed, but also afraid that he'll diagnose me with something awful!

Be honest. Did the doctor give you a referral because they could tell you were nervous and you repeatedly showed this/skewed symptoms to lead to a neurological problem,  or did the doctor examine you and say "we should refer this kid to a neuro"

As the usual cycle for those with hypochondria goes: you go to the neuro, he tells you you're fine, you believe it for 3 or 4 days, you go back into the trenches of health anxiety. This is not going to end it. You have to treat your anxiety.

In 100% agreement with this!!!  You don't have a neurological problem, you have an anxiety problem.

My foot went numb guys, it keeps having this vibrating feeling that's so slight but there. I'm so incredibly afraid.

Numbness is a sensory issue.
Your fear is with a neuromuscular disorder.
A numb foot isn't a symptom of ALS.
Most people who get dxd with ALS say "I can't" not "I feel"
iE: I can't grip my coffee cup. I can't walk on my toes. I can't stand on one foot. I can't walk without falling.

Hope that helps a little

Steph you are a smart woman.  It's a hit off that medical reassurance pipe.  But, if he follows up with some counseling, that would be a good thing.

Agreed.

It's the only way to truly get yourself back to "normal." Otherwise, we end up finding something we haven't been tested yet for to worry about. And then once we get that ruled out, it's on to the next disease. Sometimes not even. Sometimes it doesn't help at all - we think the doctor was wrong or the test was wrong, etc.

Treat the anxiety. It's the best thing you can do for yourself.

Yep, we have to have tools to avoid this in the future.  We move from disease to disease, fear to fear until we deal with the fear....attacking it at it's roots...getting some tools for dealing with trigger.

Last night I took a Xanax, my sister said it would calm me down. It did, I was asleep within an hour. I woke up and my foot wasn't numb. I feel okay at the moment.
