Pencil Stick = so many fears, help!
« on: April 08, 2014, 09:08:56 PM »
At work today, I had a long pencil in my lab coat pocket (not a very thick coat). I ran into a wall (I am very accident prone) and the pencil stabbed through my lab coat pocket into my leg! Now I have a red lump and a large bruise on my upper thigh and all I can think of is that the pencil wasn't sanitized or anything (I work at a dental office) and how I'm probably going to get sepsis or HepB or C or HIV! Maybe even a blood clot! I didn't bleed, I just have a red knot and a giant bruise! Someone...anyone? What's the worst I can expect from this?

If it didn't break the skin, then you don't need to concern yourself with blood borne diseases. They need blood. No blood, no transmission.

Additionally: It's a pencil. Not a syringe. It's not an object that commonly has blood on it to begin with.

A blood clot is not even a consideration to be made.

You're fine! You don't have anything to worry about. Reminds me that I have a little piece of the tip of a pencil embedded in the palm of my hand - been there since 1985.  :P

I guess I just worry about blood because sometimes, the pencils sit by a computer and I'm sure get covered with germs during procedures even though they hide in a small crack by the computer. I just keep thinking that maybe my coworker wasn't as careful with her pencil as I am (she's not a hypochondriac, she doesn't usually sanitize her pencils but I spray EVERYTHING because I am afraid of germs). I don't have a puncture, just a little scrape if that makes sense. No blood, just really really red (is that normal?) No lead either.

I think I have a piece of a pencil still stuck in my hand from when I was a kid but that pencil wasn't from a dental office...ugh...I see my therapist tomorrow so maybe I should talk to her about this.

When I was in grade school I got stabbed in the hand with pencil, it broke the skin, and everything was fine besides a scar I have from it

If it didn't break the skin you're fine.

I would just wash it with some alcohol and neosporin to be safe
