If I Pass A Neuro Exam....
« on: April 07, 2014, 12:11:53 AM »
If I pass the physical neurological exam, what are the odds that I actually could have MS? Do people with MS struggle to do the "walk on your heels/toes, grip my finger, follow my finger with your eyes" tests to where it's obvious?

I guess my question is, if I'm having symptoms, but my reflexes are good, I can do all the things he asks me to do and all that, am I in the clear? There's no way my parents will let me get an MRI. They're convinced HA is the culprit. So, an MRI is out of the question.

A neurologist is TRAINED to recognize those sort of things. If they thought you needed an MRI, you would be given one. Since you've apparently been cleared by the neuro, you're in the clear. HA is more than likely really the culprit.

A few days ago, I thought that you had said you had rid yourself of this fear? Or am I remembering incorrectly? Too much scrambled into my brain.

You're right, I did say that didn't I? Spoke too soon I suppose! :happy0151:

It's back now with new "symptoms". Tickle-like feeling in the foot and leg, it's the weirdest thing. The fear came back when new twitches started happening in my foot. The fear got a second wind haha. Wondering if this will ever end.

Ah, I see. I was afraid of twitching at one point. I found that it went away when I didn't think about it... that is until my body would NATURALLY twitch or tingle (which is totally normal). That would remind me of my fear, though, which would cause me to think more about it, and consequently continue twitching and feeling all out strange. It only REALLY went away once I really got serious about treating my anxiety and facing my fears head on. Have you spoken to a therapist or psychiatrist? One of those, you might find, will be of great help!

Haven't talked to anyone but my Dr. about my health anxiety. It's really only gotten bad in the last 2 months. I've always had a tendency to worry, but it's never been this bad. I've just been bouncing around from disease to disease every couple of weeks with a new set if symptoms each time. 3 weeks ago it was colon cancer or C. difficile infection after antibiotics I took a month prior. That fear caused me all kinds of trouble and symptoms.

Probably should go talk to someone but for now this forum is my therapy. I'd like to fix this myself if possible. I'm a proud person! Don't want to rely on meds to be mentally sound.

Well, as far as pride goes, I'm not ashamed to say that choosing to take medication was one of my lifesavers, and I've been told that I'll probably be dependent upon it for a long time because of my particular level of OCD. It may not be right for you, but that doesn't put you above other people who do choose it. I'm not sure if that was your intention, but there is a stigma that surrounds it that is rather irritating.

I would encourage you to try therapy at the least, though. Since you do have these repetitive concerns. Using the board as a source of therapy is one thing, but using it as a way to seek reassurance is another. It will help in the short term, but do nothing in the long term. I would suggest maybe looking into some personal success stories and posts of that type in search of methods for coping.

Thank you. I didn't mean that in the way of "putting myself above" those who do take medications for their anxiety. I just meant I don't want to give in because my Dr. says if I take it at my age, I'll likely become dependent on it.

I am dealing with the same thing right now.
I passed 3 neuro exams (one by the top ALS specialist in Dallas who runs the ALS clinic sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association- he is REALLY smart!)
I have had 4 mri's -1 brain, 1 neck, 2 spinal - all normal
My EMG of both legs and 1 arm was normal
Nerve Conductive Study all over body was normal
EEG (brain wave test) was normal

Yet I still have the feeling of perceived weakness in legs, off balance when I walk, twitching in calves, legs, back, thumb, buzzing on bottom of feet, cramping in my foot arch, etc. etc.

Its so hard to believe its anxiety, but that is what it seems to be in my case. Best advice I have to try and remind yourself that the doctors are taking you seriously and looking for something clinical to diagnose you with - makes them more money anyway to keep you on as a patient requiring care. If they are telling you to go away and that you are healthy you have to try and believe them. Its something I battle with daily.

I can relate you guys. I have been to 3 neurologists, had many tests including MRI's, nerve tests ..... And nothing can be found. My doctor once thought it was anxiety, but I have been back to him so many times he doesn't know what to call it.  It really is a struggle.

Best of luck to all of us.

You need to treat your anxiety...if your parents can afford, start going to therapy...if necessary you will take meds...

Until then, full your day with activities so you don't have free time to think about your symptoms a lot...

I'm busy a lot but I'm too the point now where the thoughts creep in no matter what I'm doing. The worst of all is when I'm at school. There's no talking in class, and since I can't focus, I'm just sitting there alone in my thoughts for 51 minutes at a time 6 times a day.

Practice focusing on something during classes...give yourself challenges i.e. Try to remember as much as you can during class, or count how times professor repeats a word...anything that involves focusing on smth and prevents you from thinking...

That'll be a tough one... I've always been a thinker and that's my greatest friend and worst enemy.
