twitching in ONLY one spot ALL DAY
« on: April 03, 2014, 11:47:43 AM »
Hello everyone! ... So I went thru the whole ALS fear a few years back, I've been educated, cleared and reassured by a few neuro's that I don't have it and never will. So I know twitching is not indictative of anything "bad".

I guess I'm just looking to see that I'm not alone. So, ALL day since I woke up-- my bicep has been twitching NON STOP-- I mean I haven't gotten a break from it! I have done nothing new such as exercize or diet or anything so I'm baffled as to why its only this ONE spot.!! It just ramps up my anxiety more! can anyone just help me out

The reason:
Muscle movements are controlled by nerve impulses. For example, a muscle contracts (tightens) when it receives a nerve impulse, and releases (relaxes) when the nerve impulse stops.
can cause a wide variety of abnormal behaviors that present as symptoms, such as muscles that pulse, throb, twitch, spasm, or contract uncontrollably as the misbehaving nervous system sends erratic nerve impulses to the body’s muscles. These erratic nerve impulses can be sent to any of the body’s skeletal muscles, at any time, and to any degree. Consequently, a wide variety of contractions from slight (pulsing) to dramatic (twitching or painful spasms), and from rhythmic to sporadic can occur.

When the body is abnormally stressed, however, a number of factors change, such as:

The body’s muscles become tighter (stress hormones cause muscles to tighten).
The electrical activity in the brain increases.
The nervous system behaves more erratically and involuntarily.
The nerves responsible for receiving and reporting information to the brain become more reactive (our nerves become more sensitive as stress hormone levels rise).

Thanks for the info! it does help to know that it is just stress/nerves/anxiety--- but why one spot!? i used to have body wide twitching and that was actually more comforting then just one random spot.

and it won't let up! i even took 2mg of klonopin to help. it wont stop.

anyone else?

Hope these helps, help some.  We all need some kind of answers, me too
t may involve one particular muscle or group of muscles, or may randomly shift from one group to another. It also may include several different muscles or groups of muscles at one time.

The twitching may appear for a few brief moments, last for minutes or hours, or persist for days, weeks, or indefinitely. It’s also common for muscle twitching to persist or worsen when trying to rest or go to sleep. Muscle twitching also may stop when resting or sleeping then resume upon waking up.

Many notice that the twitching gets worse as stress elevates, but not necessarily lessens right away when stress is reduced.

All variations and combinations of the above are common.

The terms “nervous tick” and “nervous twitch” are often used to describe muscle twitching due to elevated stress and anxiety.

This symptom can affect ANY muscle or group of muscles in the body, including those in the head, face, eyes, mouth, neck, shoulders, back, chest, abdomen, groin, genitalia, arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet, toes, etc.

Sometimes I do.

I have some twitching due to back problems.   And there may be anxiety ones in there too.  I can't know which is causing which most times.

Having been on the ALS/MS fear bus myself, I still have one major question about muscle twitching:

I have heard that it does occur with Multiple Sclerosis (I've heard it only affects lesion-affected muscles or when the person is fatigued), but is it an early/beginning symptom of Multiple Sclerosis?

There is a mixed school of thought on that Karloff. Some studies say ms doesn't have twitches some studies say it does.
